Get it, or wait?

The argument to wait for Sonar 3.1 is a compelling one...let them work out the bugs and provide fixes before subjecting yourself to the role of a guinea pig.
However, on the other side of the coin, how about these arguments...

1 - Cakewalk has been in the digital audio business for a long time...they probably have it down pretty well. They've probably done exhaustive testing.
2 - 3.0 has the features that I always wished 2.2 had.
3 - My main concern is digital audio recording (no midi) and 2.2 works great with my system. Could I expect less from 3.0?

Any thoughts about this?

Terry

Well the question here is....is the current upgrade price the best one?
If you think the upgrade price is only going to get higher, buy the disc.....just don't install it.Wait for the first patch to come out and install it then.Saving you headaches and $$$.

I call your attention to Sonar 1.0.

Well, good responses. Having been caught up in the 3.0 hype, I've been scouring for information for the last few days. Your succinct, down to earth responses are appreciated.

On another note, Craig Anderton was one of the beta testers. Here's a thread from his forum:

http://www.musicplayer.com/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=1;t=014648

He hasn't experienced any problems with 3.0. In fact, he mentions that Cakewalk may accuse him of not testing exhaustively enough! Unfortunately, the original thread was removed after expressed concern from Cakewalk. Apparently, it was too much too soon. However, this is still a good read. Since the release is now official he is free to speak more openly and he is answering questions from the readership. This morning I see that a Cakewalk employee has joined the discussion. That's cool.

So, I went ahead and ordered the upgrade. Like Mr. Anderton, I'll try running it parallel at first. If it crashes and burns I'll just complain and wait for the fixes to show up. In the meantime the work done with 2.2 will be safe and waiting for the 3.0 treatment.

So, ship date is 5-6 weeks out? All of a sudden that seems like a long time.

You can have two versions installed and they don't interfere with each other? Tying to think this ahead using my less than stellar ComputorWhizDom, on an up-grade, would you install a second ver. 2 in a different default directory, then add the up-grade to that one?

(I have been blessed with an extremely stable setup.
UpGrade = FEAR. :rolleyes: )

Two unreated items...

UltraFunk with automation! Sweet. They wern't befor.

Tubedude. You go a few hours w/o saving? Shee's, I save after ever take, or every two minutes, which ever comes first...sometimes twice just in case... :D :D :D

I didn't see any wifey permition on the excuse list....

This will be my (representing most of us) major consideration...

I'm attracted, but like usual, I gotta wait at least couple months of saving. Specialy this time, when it sounds like I need to upgrade my P-III system first... :(

Mixsit,

After your question about running parallel versions, I realized that maybe it isn't all that simple. I was assuming that the upgrade version would work as a stand alone application, but maybe it just adds the new code to the existing code?
I've posted a question over on Craig Anderton's forum, hoping that he will notice it and explain how he did it. If he does, I'll post his response here.

In the past, so long as you installed the new version in its own separate directory, you could run dual versions. In fact, in one version (Sonar 1.0?), that was the way Cakewalk recommended it to be installed.

I'm upgrading as soon as I can, you guys do what you want. :D

And of course, Sonar 3 will arrive Norway much later than in the states... :(

I am staying. I went from PA9 to Sonar1 then Sonar2. I am done.

My puter is a lowly 566mhz celery, it cant handle the fancy stuff.

I will upgrade my whole system when Sonar 5 comes out.
PHP:
What does this do?
Just checking.

Come on, David. You know better than that! Upgrade now! :D

I cant think of upgrading to SONAR 3 on a 566 Celery.

It reminds me of those kit cars ( we have them in the US). You buy a body that resembles a Ferrari, and you put it on a Pontiac Fiero, which is a shit car. I never understood that; people drive around in a Ferrari look-alike that is a stripped down Pontiac Fiero.

I guess I will upgrade when my puter dies. It's still hangin in there, this lil old HP Pavillion:cool:
