Ed, John: well, I don't hear a 'sound' in my head, so does that mean I'm not engineering? Nah, I don't buy it. I'd put it this way. If you've got lots of experience, then you will have a sound in your head that you're trying to create in the mix. If you're lower down on the engineering scale, you've got a song in your head that you record, and then in the mix, you try to make it sound as good as you can. In your case, you know where you want to go with the mix. In my case, I don't know where I want to go with the mix - so I explore and try things out, and go with the best discoveries.

But what *has* started happening for me recently is that I will hear an arrangement in my head - I'll think for example 'that would sound really good with flute' or 'I'm dumping the bass part - it justs get in the way'.

Hearing things in your head is a matter of experience. And luck.
