If I've got a load of mp3's or whatever to download!!Can I turn the monitor off and keep the tower running. for eg -overnight maybe

Yep. Disable "Auto connect" in your Internet connection unless you have a fixed connection. Also disable any "power save" modes and you should be ready to download the entire Internet.
