Looking for my first pair of monitors & been offered a pair of 8020A's, how well regarded are these?

Montiors are a very personal thing. Some swear by brand X, and some by brand Y. Personally, Genelecs sound good to listen to, but I have never cared for having to mix on them. On the other hand, the larger (more expensive) ones seem to be a little more useful and enjoyable for me, but the need for Genelecs that large rarely presents itself and they still would not be my first choice for primary near or midfields. The good news is that there are a lot of quality monitor offerings that cost less than the Genelecs. I personally am a long time Dynaudio user, but I have been really wanting to get some time in on the Focal monitors. If budget permitted I might also have a pair of Barefoot's. There are a lot of users out there that really like the ADAM monitors as well. I also know a lot of people that really dislike them as well, which once again shows how personal the decision is. If you were to stay with Dynaudio, ADAM, Barefoot, Focal, Quested, PMC, or a brand like that, your resale value should stay higher which would make it easier to switch later should you decide you need something different. If possible, do your best to listen to as many as you can in YOUR environment and try doing a quick mix through them and then listen to that mix in an environment you know very well. That will give you a bit if a chance to see how they will impact your workflow. In the end, no matter what monitors you get you will need to learn them, but the better match for you will probably be the one you need to learn the least, the one that intuitively gets you better translation.
