gating the 'under the snare' mic

i think my limitations with the english language are becoming an issue here. what i mean by gating the bottom mic is to control how much of it i'll print to tape (er... to disk), since i only have 4 inputs on my soundcard (i record snare, kick and stereo). i don't care about any rattling noises. i've never had a problem with that. what i want is to get a better sound by adding a mic under the snare. i've done this before, and it's the only way to make my drummer's 5" snare sound close to what i like. of course i always strive for the best sound on the upper mic first (as with all the mics), and then i'll add the bottom mic.
