gate and compressor

i'm looking for a rack gate and compressor are there any that you have used and recormmend ?
is it better to get seperates or something that will do both ?

thanking anybody in advance for any help.
 
I generally like separates. Having said that, I know that DBX makes combo compressors and gates -- e.g., the 166XL. Not the best comp out there, but utilitarian. Aphex also makes combination comps and gates (e.g., the 240). I have an Aphex 622 gate that I like a lot and I also have an Aphex Compellor compressor that works well for unobtrusive compression and includes a type of limited gate. What kind of budget are you looking at and what do you want to use it on?
 
i do mainly rock music ,i wanted the gate to take out any low level noise around the 60-80 hertz
and the compressor to be very adjustable light ,soft ,hard through to very heavey

money about £500
 
Since you are in the UK, you might want to look at a Drawmer product. They make really good gates (they make the industry standard DS201) and make really good compressors (models 1960 and 1968). While these are upper end, they also make a whole slew of more affordable models. You might check out the Drawmer DL241XLR which should be in your price range. I've not used this model, but I have a 1968 comp and like it a lot. Drawmer comps are not known for extreme color, but they are quite good. An alternative if you want a more colorful comp is to get a separate gate - like a used Aphex 622 or Drawmer DS201 for around $250-300 or so (these would be really good gates), and then get a separate colorful compressor like an ART VLA Pro or a DBX 160a. You could always also get a used RNC for "polite" compression for about $125 or so. Lots of options. Note however, that really good compressors tend to cost lots of money, so you should consider how much you want/need to invest in compression.

A gate will just shut off the whole signal, not just the low end.

Sounds like we're just about to take a stroll down that "don't gate 60 cycle hum... fix the ground" path... :rolleyes:
 
Actually, the Drawmer DS201 Gate and Aphex 622 Gate do have filters that allow you to gate for keyed frequencies. Of course, its always better to remove the noise at the source if possible, rather than attempt fix it using a gate. But, these gates do more than cut the entire signal.

if gateing the problem is not the way to go how would i go about fixing this ?

would i have to use balanced cables were possible and a power supply for the equipment to emi it ?
