I have an Emac with the Garageband Recording program on it and I want to record my band using it. I have a Mackie 12 channel mixer that I've plugged into the computer using an M-Audio Audiophile USB. I want to record onto Garageband with at least 5 different tracks for vocals/instruments, so I'd be using 5 different microphones all plugged into the mixer. The problem is I cannot get the program to record from the mics from the mixer, all I can get it to do is record from the microphone built into the computer. Is it possible to record with Garageband using a mixer and record with different tracks recording at the same time? And if so how do I do it?

(I posted this in the newbie forum as well, but my buddy says this forum is more popular/cooler.)

GarageBand will allow you to select the Audiophile as the recording source, and therefore anything plugged into it.

As for recording 5 tracks at once; first of all, the Audiophile is a 2 track device. You can submix 5 tracks at the mixer, but you to still have to record 2 tracks.

Second of all, Garageband only allows at most a stereo track at a time. So you have two options:

1. Record as a live band, and submix everyone on the Mackie onto a stereo track in GarageBand.

2. Record everyone single, track by track, allowing overdubs and far great control in mixing, panning, and sound levels.

What you've got is a bit limited for a band, but it's workable.
