My classic rock band is looking for cost-effective self-powered monitors for vocals only, and noticed the Galaxy Audio "Galactic Package", which consists of one powered and two unpowered Hot Spot mini-monitors. Can anyone offer us the benefit of their experience with this package, or any of its components? Thanks in advance.

We have used the unpowered hot spots for some years now. They have their pluses and minuses.

They tend to have little bass, but work fairly well for vocals. You need then up near neck level to hear them well. They generally require a separate stand, which takes up more floor space. They tend to last forever, so the're durable.

Because they need to be up hiogher, they are visible and in the line of sight with the audience. For some, that can be a minus.

I have no experiece with the piowered variety, but expect they work similar to the unpowered.

I've owned a passive Hot Spot for several years and have used the powered unit on a couple of occasions (they both provide the same basic level of sonic quality).

They work OK for vocals but they have very little low end (so don't try to pump the whole band through them.) As Ed indicates you need them on a mic stand very close to head level. This still takes up less stage space than a wedge but for the front row people (singers, guitars, etc) it can be a little weird.

I do most of my gigging as a drummer or keyboard player - so the hot spots work well for me since I can fit them in smaller areas (if all I need is vocals). However, one of the bands I work with uses a lot of sequencing - in which case I need a wedge to hear everything I need to hear.

They will never sound as good as a wedge with a 12" speaker - but the are convenient.
