FX Teleport Anyone ???

Any users of FX Teleport out there. I did a search and the results are pretty few and old. Basically its a program that allows you to offload you vst processing to another pc. Like a UAD card, but another pc linked via cat5 cable. I hate to take the time to build up another pc and it not be worth it. Most report nice results, but they are old threads.

I used this a while ago and it worked pretty well.

I think most PC's are at the spec where CPU isn't much of an issue.

I know I can pretty much load as many plugins as I want now and rarely do I get a glitch.

Save the cost of a new PC and upgrade to a better CPU!

My Quad Intel 3400 (i think) is just over £100 now.. well worth it

Im running a quad core now, and I at the most have been up around 50% usage with alot of plug-ins and 22 tracks. But I have my latency set low too. With the same project and higher latency then its drops to 20% and less. But, if the program works, then I could use an older system and not worry about track count or plugin count at all.

Use Reaper ... it has Reamote.
Same principle as FX Teleport, which I own and never use.

Update. I pieced another pc together and using FX Teleport was able to run and extra 10 plugins. The pc which ran the extra plugins only had 1 gig of memory. I need to increase the memory and get another case to match my DAW case. In either case, I figure with extra memory I should be able to increase the number of extra plugins to say 15 to 20 depending on the plugin. I can see where this program would shine when using memory hogging midi synth programs or cpu intensive plugins. The latency between the two pc's is not even an issue. And I used Windows Remote to control the FX-Teleport pc using my existing monitor and keyboard/mouse. Works rather well. Once I get the extra memory and case, I'll do another load test and report. Also note that my main DAW is a Quad Core rig and I have yet to have any cpu usage issues using it alone. But having an FX-Teleport rig will offer me more room if I ever need it. And when all is done I may have $100 in it.

Bush, can I ask a question, is this remote control hard to set up, and does this mean that the second box doesn't need mouse and keyboard after remote is set up and running?

Is all still going well with your music LAN?

No second mouse or keyboard. The help in Remote will walk you through it. It was really simple and it works quite well. Just make sure your two pc's are connected via a giga-port connection, or the amount of plugins you can use will be limited. You will also need a giga lan straight thru cable (Best Buy). When you start Remote it will ask you to log into the connected pc. You have to create a user account on the other pc. Once logged in, you control the other pc. If you want to control the main pc just shrink the Remote window and you back on the main pc. Its really neat. I dont use it though. I running a quad core Phenom II 955 and I have yet to max it out. I just read about FX-Teleport and decided to try the demo. Works well, and someone with a couple of older rigs, it would be a good thing to try.

Glad to hear you got a hip box--not much of geek anymore, and not hip with the latest cpu and ram --- but glad for you that you have the "headroom " with your system to get things done. Been building the dual core boxes for 300 to 400, or so, and haven't dared to look at the nicer and finer stuff out there. The dual core parts and cpu are cheap enough for me to justify getting, saving some money, but getting slower machines,,,,,,there may be a trade off issue in here somewhere for me.

giga ports--your referring to network thru-put, right ( ? )--you think the normal 10/100 ethernet ports handle a good load of vst work ?? My hub is just 10/100----would like to give this thing a try like you did,.....

i'm kinda in this wierd thinking mode about this---I'm turning into a "cpu" farmer, growing machines and farming out the vst's......i dont know, kinda wierd, cause its not something i foresaw........heck there once was a time when it was just fun to find a bottle, find a simple record button, and jam.....this is not the tape portastudio anymore--got a little too much going on---with the technology. just venting.

thanks for your help with remote. hope you use ear protection with your axes and that head in your avatar......it looks like its powerful enough to shake the insides of your lungs a bit-- ---which is a feeling that I truly enjoy.

I do wear protection at times. To take full advantage you need a giga lan (1,000). 10/100 base will give you maybe a few more plugins. When I first connected mine I didnt realize my remote pc had two different nic connections. A 10/100 base and a giga. I had connceted to the slower 10/100 and didnt see much of an improvement. So I checked on FX_Teleports site and read about making sure its transferring at Giga Lan speed. Well I wasnt. Needless to say once I switched to the faster port, it worked well.

I don't know about the pricing of the remote software, but I bought a cheap KVM switch awhile ago for $20 that will allow use of the same monitor, keyboard and mouse on 2 computers. One of the best investments I've ever made....my desk is much less cluttered now.

good tip but not what he's after... he's wanting to off load some processes to a second machine to releave the primary...
