FW1884-So far only 1 small problem

Hello All,

I got my FW1884 about a week ago and it was up and running within 24 hours (If I didn't have to go to work it would have been sooner). The only problem I am having or maybe I am not understanding is...since it can act as a mixer as well during recording with Sonar or Cool Edit, how come when I push the Solo/Mute buttons or even change the fader levels it still records the tracks at the normal level. I have read the manual and it does say that only the (trim) knobs affect the sound, but is there or is there not a way to manually control and change the track levels whilst recording?
Also I can't seem to get my compressor hooked up in the Send effects track, but that is the least of my problems right now (guess that makes 2 small issues).
Anyone have any ideas?

Thanks

I am not an expert by any means, and certainly not on your specific piece of equipment. However the solo/mute button on every other console I've worked on doesn't effect what goes on to tape if it's recording. It's basically a tool for while you are listening BACK to a track you've recorded (or in 'mute' mode to remove that specific track from the mix). It allows you (in solo mode - without having to change all the other faders on an otherwise decent mix) to adjust EQ and such on a specific track then immediately put it right back inthe mix, while you're continuing to listen.

Again, I'm no expert. But that's always been my understanding of how solo/mute works, and I've worked on 'old' time console/tape 8-tracks and a few of the new(er) digital recorders.

Hi I-Am.

I am (ha ha ) also a fw-1884 user but I am using mine with Cubase. However I should be able to answer your question anyway.

When you are setting your recording levels you want to make sure the "computer" button is highlighted and then use the trim encoders to set the levels. Set it as high as you can without the red clipping light coming on.

In computer mode the faders will only work for mixing within the application you are using.

Now once you have set the recording level of the channel and you find that the playback volume is either too loud or not loud enough, press the "mon Mix" button. This will now allow you to use the fader to set the playback volume of the instrument on that channel.

Make sense ?

Also you should head over to www.tascamforums.com as there is now a dedicated forum for 1884 users and there are plenty of Sonar users there.

Hope that helps..

So if I understand you correctly in computer mode you use the trim knob to set the levels you are recording. then switch to monitor mix mode to set up a cue mix using the faders, and in mix mode it will still send the signal to the computer for recording? thanks in advance.

Matt.

Going to mon mix mode alows you to use the 1884 as a mixer. The faders in that mode only effect the playback volume of the instruments that are being played and not any of the recorded tracks.

After I adjust volumes in Mon mode I usually switch back to Computer mode, so I can't tell you for sure if it will still record in mon mode. But I don't see why not..
