This is my master plan for my new recording rig at home. Curious to hear feedback on how well you think this will work.....

I have a PC at home, it's a Dell with a gig of ram, about 4 years old. Im removing the current hard drive and fitting a 500GB drive in there, and a fresh install of Windows XP. Also, my Sonic, Rayzoons, and Sonar software.
Also, im removing the soundcard and installing a E-MU 0404 PCI

My Behringer mixer will run to this card. I'll be plugging guitars, keyboards, and mics into the mixer. I record one track at a time for the most part.

Sounds like a plan to me, anyone have any feed back or suggestions for things I might not have considered here?

Thanks,

Monitors.

More ram.

And 500 gigs is more than you'll use in ten years.

Sound like a plan? Sure. Why not.

.

Keep the original hard drive, reformat and reinstall windows (OS drive).... Use the 500 gig as your music drive only.

Carter,

This machine will be only for music. The original hard drive developed a read problem, so it's going on the scrap heap.

I have a set of monitors, but they ned replacing. Just looking for a good set at a good price. There are a few options....

Why the e-mu 0404? Will you use the midi/spdif? Will you be recording drums? Also, if you really want the emu, you can get it elsewhere for cheaper. What's your budget for monitors?

Thanks for the link to the savings, much appreciated.

Why? It just seems like a way to get the job done within my budget. I decided I wanted to go soundcard rather than USB or fire wire, and reading the description, this allows me to record direct from my mixer. Everyone who owned it seemed to be very happy with it. As for drums, No, I wont be recording live drums. I use rayzoons drum software and a few different drum machines or applications.....

I hope to lwearn to use the MIDI, but I dont have to at this point.

Budget for monitors? I'd say around $400.

With that budget, you should be able to get a decent pair. Behri B2031As restock - $260, Alesis M1 Mk2s(kind that i've got) - $300, KRK RP6 - $400, KRK RP8 - £440. There's quite a lot to choose from. These are quite well respected though...
