Was just reading the latest EQ Mag, and there's an interview with Chris Fogel, who mixed Alanis Morrisette's latest album, Under Rug Swept.

Chris: "We're in a "stereo+" age, so I reference the Coldplay record a lot. I really like what they're doing as far as not having much regard for mono."

EQ: So you don't check in mono then?

Chris: "Yea, I do. I check in mono sometimes just to get a laugh. If something is going away, then good - that's the way I want it."

Yeah, these days checking how your mix sounds with surround simulations is probably more important than mono.

Just happened to me last night in fact. I was down in the garage working and listening to a disc on my wife's boom box. It sounded all fucked up. I went and looked and the "surround sound" was on. I bet quite a high percentage of people listen to stereo CD's on surround sound systems when they're at home.

And do they even sell mono TV sets these days?

all the major radio stations in DC transmit in stereo. so mono is of no concern to me.

That's pretty interesting. I never really thought about surround compatability. How does a surround decoder interpret a normal stereo track?

I know the earlier ones were just adding a delay for surround but are they doing matrixing on the stereo signal to derive the center channel? If that is the case would it make sense to use MS(?) instead of x/y for stereo micing to give the decoder more to work with?

I'm a little buzzed so please excuse me if that question makes no sense whatsoever.

Yesterday I spend the whole day mixing a demo for a band, who had recorded in another studio, but weren't satisfied with their mixing abilities. So I had to kind of clean up the mess the others made. They recorded the whole thing with eq, comps etc and most tracks were kind of f8cked up. Biggest problem was that they recorded everthing in mono, and only once. So single guitartracks with 1 mike etc. Spend most of the day just getting it to sound stereo. F*ck mono, I'm saying that for several years now. (Offcourse a little compatible doesn't do harm)

Just like the cassette. Whenever a bands walks in with a cassette, I always go like......cool, what's that. I've never seen one of those before. is it some new sort of digital media?

High everybody!

I now check for mono compatibility, as I once heard a mix of mine over a pc with one speaker only --- haunting. And believe it or not there still are a few around..

Ciao

i will sometimes hit the mono button on my desk when tracking and mixing drums.

when i mix a complete song, i may even start for a while in mono, and then start positioning track.

its nice if your track translates to mono well, if not, it's a reminder for people to buy stereo speakers!

checking in mono can be good for looking for phase problems.....

just a thought.

but those phase problems would only be a problem if someone was listening to your mix in MONO... and I could really give a shit less about that <1% who would be listening in MONO

I understand your point, but sometimes it is VERY useful to know if you have phase problems, because if the problem is corrected you will sometimes find it far easier to get the sound you were really looking for without jumping through as many hoops.
