hey folks, this is my first mix with the yamaha msp5s.
the tracking was done on the aw4416.although i hear a lot
of problems with the mix,i decided to post it for feed back
purposes.
i apoligize for the drum machine, but until my studio is finished
i cant track real ones.
mixing aside,i would appreciate any comments on the song itself,
good or bad.
the song is "funked up".
thanks,
sheppard

I liked the tune. Nice break.

Sounded a lot like a very successful artist over at mp3.com,

Big Bill and the Cool Tones.

Did a drinkin' song with a line spoken during a break, "She was just a moonshiner's daughter but she always made me liquor."

I will rag on you about that thin guitar panned hard. It needs something in the other channel. SOMEthing. Anything!

thanks Dr.the thin guitar was (at first)part of a call and answer thing.i had another guitar panned h.l.
that was playing 7/9 chords
on the first beat of every measure.after several listens this morn-
ing,i decided that the tone of the guitar was sucky, and left it out.
i do plan to redo this song, and i will add that part back when i do.
thanks for the comments.(big bill you say?i must go hear this)

Nice job. I really enjoyed the vocal, but the break went on a bit too long for my taste. It-the break-started off well, but then drifted off into a funk blues jam. The song then lost it's direction. I think you should have brought the vocal back in and cut back on the instrumental stuff. Your voice has a lot of personality and really makes this track stand out. Again, you did a nice job and I enjoyed listening to it. :)

thanks for the listen.i agree about the direction of the tune.
when i redo it,there will be vocals after the f# break.i am a firm beleiver in not forcing a vocal, even if it is silly b.s. like this, and thats why there are only three verses so far.as soon as i come up
with more i will add them.

Fun tune! Good bass licks. The first guitar was too panned for me.

I like the guitar flood though...sweet.

I would just use a bit of a reverb send for the other side to fill the guitar a tiny bit so it doesn't get so lonely in those sections.

Great harpin!

Nah....don't fade bang it out!

Have to agree that the weak link in this is the guitar tones/mix.

The drum machine wasn't bad as drum machines go.

Cool tune, bass & harp.

Cool tune sheppard.I always been a fan of funky tunes.I know you're not looking for mixing coments but I hear a little digital distortion at the :27 mark on the clean guitar.I know that sound all too well because I have a heck of a time taming it.LOL....is it plugged straight into the yamaha?Thats when I usually have problems with clipping on the clean guits when I plug straight into the recorder without an external Pre.........Bass is grooving along really nice.....harmonica is sweet...I heard that guitar clip again.LOL....Ok,enough about that.:D

Nice walk at 1:16!Cool solo licks. Is the lead guitar direct or miked? It sounds kind of direct.......I dont mind the drum machine.I use them a lot myself.LOL.....that harp playing really adds to a tune like this.Nice harp licks dude!

The vocals sound pretty good too.I bet they would sound cool with a ZZ Top Flange thrown on them!:D

Nice job man.I know you're digging that Yamaha.;)

thanks for the comments everyone.
the bass was played by my freind ricky ballard.not bad for a second take from a guy who picks up a bass once a year, huh?
the harp was played by mike chambers and was a first take.
the guitar solo was done on a fender hot rod deville with a clean tone.i dirtied it up using the yamahas amp simulater.the hard panned guitar was also done on the deville, but miced with
an akg d 190e.i also had two of the yamahas pres chained
together so i could use a low volume setting on the amp.(it was late and the ole lady didnt wanna hear that shit)that may account for the distortion.
i will be glad when the studio is finished.tracking will be so much easier then.

thanks rick,glad you enjoyed it.
what part of georgia is lawrenceville in?are you close to montgomery?

Ditto to all previous comments.....nice tune, ....gets a bit lost after the breakdown and although I liked the crap out of that lick leading into the lead...it seemed out of character with the roots-funk nature of the song.
Cool stuff though.

Lawrenceville is northeast of atlanta off of highway 316 about 40 min's west of athen's. I live closer to the buford side of lawrenceville right off of interstate 85. i'm down in phenix city alabama and columbus georgia about once or twice a week...not to far from montgomery.

cool tune, man!.......listened to it alot last night and tonight!:D

Peace

Rick

yeah true...actually for the good part of it, it's distorting....
great tune however...good work

Dude....this is COOL!!!

Im totally loving these vocs....Cool! Im listening at work so mix help wont be coming from me...... but, neat interpretation. I havent heard your other stuff so i dont know if this is the style you always write in.... ...If it is, cool! .....if it isnt,.... Cooler! I could hear that style of vocs over alot of different things and like em all. ...lotsa fun.
Im not real crazy about the lead guitar tone. It came off as a touch flat.. just mho.

Cool stuff man
gw/5

I loved the funky guitar on the right side. That sounded great. Good harmonica too. Good guitars all around. Nice lead part. Liked the bass as well. I liked the little run the guitar and bass did, but I think it should only be used once.

Vocally it sounded like your voice might give out before you made it to the end :). I suppose that's why you're "Growlin Clanence." Some of the lyrics were a little gross ("licked my fingers, made me think of you"). Or did you mean it in a different way?

Good job Clarence.

Funk me up! Play that thang. Redo the guits, and this is a keeper. Vocals and harp are perfect.

Jake is right! :)

Good playing, mix could be wetter. It sounds too damn dry.

i have been listening to it a lot in my truck and i can hear all of the things you guys have mentioned.
i will definately re-track the lead guit.i think i will leave the hard right guit.it should be more ear friendly once i add the hard left guit back into the mix.
again, thanks for all the feedback,it will be put to good use.

p.s.those "gross lyrics" are a reference to dining on poon tang.
