Looks like Eric Johnson has (or will have) a signature model through them. Heck, if its good enough for a tone freak like Eric Johnson, then its good enough for anybody!
I'd say that they fall into the botique category, which probably explains their price. They don't buy huge quantities of components and get the accompanying bulk-purchase discounts. Also the components they use are probably the nicest they can find. Plus they don't have armies of low-wage workers overseas putting their amps together for them. It's probably just a few people there in Austin, and doing everything by hand takes time. They probably get paid by the hour, and not minimum wage either.
Put it all together and it comes out to be significantly more expensive to make an amp that way than to have a huge factory churning out dozens (or hundreds) of amps every day.
