Hiya all,

I am planning to record some guitar into my onboard soundcard, which apparently supports 'full duplex' operation. Does this mean that I can use my computer speakers as my guitar amplifier, i.e whatever I play I will be able to hear instantly on my computer speakers?

Thanks!

Hearing your guitar through the speakers would happen whether the card was full duplex or not. Full duplex means that the card can play back digital audio already recorded from the hard drive at the same time as it's recording new stuff from its inputs.

Is there any software that enables me to hear my guitar instantly through my speakers? I have been recording them and playing them back!

assuming that you have some sort of preamp (or 'direct in box') to bring your guitar level up a bit to line level - you should be able to plug it right in to the 'line in' on your sound card and hear it through your computer speakers - you could probably even plug straight in but I don't think that you will get a real strong signal (unless your guitar maybe has active electronics??? - not sure if this puts out a hotter signal or not?))

just make sure that the 'line in' isn't muted - you can set this in the windows mixer or whatever mixer app you have
