Before Dan Kennedy started calling his company Great River Electronics, he called it “Kennedy & Son Electronics”. The first model MP2 and MP4 mic preamps carried that name. I am the original owner of one of those MP4 preamps (I may have been the first in California to have one).
The MP4 is 4 channels of the finest “straight wire with gain” preamps ever built- period. Transformers on inputs, no-transformers on outputs (best for “clean and transparent”). Has a DI on each channel.
Here’s what Fletcher had to say:
“The MP-4 and the MP-2 were Great River's first offerings. The MP-4M and MP-2M have output transformers because I asked Dan for output transformers [get it "M"... "Mercenary"]... Hank asked for the dual outputs for "no latency monitoring"... which was then given the model designation MP-4MH [Mercenary / Hank].
The thing buries a Millennia on a sonic level... eats if for breakfast, shits it out before lunch and has zero remorse in the process. If you can snag that puppy for $3k or less you're a very lucky man.”
My unit is in almost new condition, both operationally and “looks”. Like Dan’s early designs, it does not have an on/off switch (again, following the minimalist philosophy). It is identical to later models labeled “Great River”, except for the “Kennedy & Son” front panel stencil. Includes original shipping box.
Note: This is not the NV series preamp. The NV are Neve inspired designs, preamps with “a sound”. This pre was designed for classical and acoustic recording (though it sounds fantastic on drum overheads), and has a large amount of *clean* gain available. Search GearSlutz.
