Look Mom, I can play!
If I open fruity loops within Home Studio 2002 to create drum loops, (tools>fruity loops) can I use soundfont drum kits within FL? If so, how? If not, how do I extend the drum kit options in FL? The standard kits that came with the program are too techno for audio, imho.

I'm pretty sure that fruity loops doesn't have soundfont support, although if your hardware support soundfonts you can use them via MIDI in fruity.

There is a trick though. Fruity now supports buzz machines, and there IS a buzz machine that loads soundfonts! However, it's only 6 voice polyphonic :(

dont worry

just make take your wav samples of whatever you want, and drag them into the "samples" folder in fruity loops. Or, make your own samples (in .wav format still) and again, drag them into there....orginize them however you wish (make some more folders...just make sure they are INSIDE the "samples" folder!)

Then, open FL and there they are on your list to the left. Then just use them like any other sample...

hope that helps

Actually FruityLoops 3.4 does have the FruityLive soundfont player. It's an add-on you have to buy though.

Thanks everyone. I omitted to say I only have the FL Express version, will drag n drop work in express? Shackrock, I can see where samples can be imported as WAV files, (file>import>beat slice). Will that do it? But they just seem to be a small library of samples. Where do I get new ones from?

Charger, I can see that soundfont player is an upgrade for $39. But it doesnt say if it will work with FL express.

Slackmaster2k, I have a s/b Live! platignum s/c. How do I use that to load soundfonts to use them in FLE?

Samples are not the same as soundfonts. A good soundfont will respond properly to velocity and aftertouch, for instance, and a sample will not.

For samples, you can use any samples located anywhere on your hard drive. Under Options->Directories you can specify folders where your samples are located. Fruity supports a few different formats (wave being one of course), but I don't recall them all at the moment.

As far as I know you can load soundfonts into the SB Live!, probably using the software that came with the card (that livedrive shit). Then you'll trigger the sounds via MIDI. How this works in detail I can't say for sure because i don't have any hardware that supports soundfonts.

Thanks Slackmaster, I have found out where the soundfonts are loaded in Live! I'm now going to try to get the midi to trigger the s/fonts, as you suggested. I'll let yopu know how I get on.

Thanks fro the info and the great web sites tdukex. I haven't had the pleasure of visiting prorec before. Needless to say it is now firmly marked in my favourites! I'm beginning to make sense of it all. I think!

And thanks to everyone else too. Rock on!
