queepy

aka Variaxman
Been awhile since I've done anything recording wise...a friend wrote some words out and I attempted to turn them into a song.....pretty rusty on guitar but it sure felt great to play again...sorry bout the vocals..I think I will be able to do 'em better next time around, just wondering how it's coming together so far ..has a few tracks of guitar including a acoustic track that's pretty buried right now...I kinda like the tone I got for the guitar solo...used a big muff fuzz setting on the ol 'pod...
Feels weird to be posting as queepy, but after my ill fated alias adventure in the cave...I guess I'm stuck with it now...

Sounds pretty good man...guitars seem to be a bit back in this mix. Same with the bass....they both could come up a little compared to the drums.

There's a bit of a classic sound going on - I know the gits are mixed low but they often are & often it works.
Whilst this would rock harder with the guitars UP in the mix - it works as it is.
It sounds like the mix on Raw POwer which is universally slated BUT, although the remix sounded more powerful the original Bowie mix suited the late Glam era far better.

Hey Dogman...agree about the guitar levels..I usually mix the opposite way and have to bring guitars/bass down a bit....trying to finesse it a bit more and bring them up slowly....just posted a new mix with more guitar...the link at the top of the thread plays the newest mix...thanks for listening!

Hey Ray, whats up ? I am definitely influenced by 70's glam/pop/punk sounds...as I mentioned to Dogmans post, I envision this to be a guitar driven rock thing....adjusted mix to bring up guitars a bit....I think the vocals may be a bit buried now , but gonna redo them soon anyways...If I could only get the vocal sound of The Sweet...I would be happy! Thanks for the feedback!!

Hey queepyaxeman, sounds pretty good. I like the vintage feel to this song.

I think the bass is kinda boomy - not very defined. The vocals can come up considerably. I can't make out anything you're singing. Maybe bring the tambourine down some and the drums up too. Overall sounds pretty awesome though. Nice job. :)

Hey Greg, whats up? Yeah, I need to do some Eq shaping on the bass for sure...I think I cut a bit at 85 hz and boosted a bit at 180 hz, so as to not interfere with the kick, but still have a big bottom :p.......maybe a bit of boost in the higher frequencies would help....I'm a sucker for a well placed tambourine in a song, so I tend to go overboard with it in the mix....will take it down for sure...still getting the feel for the way I want to sing this as far as the phrasing cadence, so it was not sung with the most confidence in the world..I think I will be able to improve upon retracking tho!
Thanks for the feedback...appreciate it!

Yeah I like tambourines and cowbells and stuff too. It is tempting to make them too loud.

I think that boost at 180 is where you bass problem may lie. I personally don't like that frequency area with bass guitar. I always cut around there to get the boom out. I know that's where the "meat" is, but for my stuff it's just too boomy sounding. I try to get a tight bass with good kick presence by scooping out a little from around 100-500. It usually works pretty well for me.

cool...I'm gonna try that...I think that may be the problem with the bass sound on my recordings....pretty much learning which frequencies are the hot spots for particular instruments...I really like the kinda treble "lead" bass tone that guys like John Entwistle,Chris Squire,Geddy Lee, Paul McCartney have, and have always strived for that sound, and failed miserably.....
thanks for the tip!

No prob. Scooping some of the lows will definitely help achieve that sound.

Very cool tune man.

Sounds kinda glamish\Punkish.
A bit in the vein of Sheer Heart attack "Queen".

I dug the Vox, Your vox fits the tune very well.
I wouldent do much with the vox exept getting them abit more in front.

As mentioned the bass needs more definiton, from the little I could hear though you got that bass tight:cool:

The guitars could use some tweaking to seperate them better, try lowering the EQ on one track and push at the same spot on the other one.

The Big muff solo needs to come up a bit as well, Its sounds just brilliant .
My favorite Distortion Pedal, I got a Handmade one to try in my store today, dident get much work done:D

But most importantly the song rocks big time, so does your emminent Playing.
Good job Mate:)

Thanks for the comments Nak! I have taken all the advice feedback and did a bit of tweeking to the mix....I still can't get the bass were I want it , and think maybe its just tracked poorly to begin with...I may redo it...
Laid down a new vocal track and added some backing vocals as well.
Kicked the guitar solo up a bit ...doesnt take to much prodding for me to do that :p...Those Big Muffs kick ass when you can dial them in good...as I've gotten older, I try to mess with the settings rather then just cranking all the knobs and sounding like a giant mutant mosquito!:D
Thanks again for the feedback!

Sounds better. The vox still sound kinda thin and hard to understand. Don't be scared to bring that shit out front. They're vocals. They're supposed to be up front a little. The bass sounds less boomy now, but it could also come up some to pop out a little. Drums sound a lot better. Maybe a little reverby, but good. Definitely better. :)

The drums are a bit on the snappy side for me. I thought they were too loud, but it may be a tone issue. Vocals might come up just a tad, as they are not that distinct (I can't make out the lyrics). Bass still (from reading previous) not uber present. Overall it's a great tune - very catchy and good for the genre. Just some mixing tweaks here and there for me.....

Thanks for the comments Greg & idol957....
I kind of like the level of the drums now....but I think there is a kind of hollow sound to them...I did add some verb to the drum track which might be the cause...
The vocals sounded really up front on both my headphones, and my monitors when I remixed...but they are pretty lame sounding when I listen to this on my home stereo and car so something weird there as well....
I decided I'm gonna re-track the bass guitar ...I think I can get a better sound from the get-go rather then trying to fix a weak recording with eq/compression etc...
Thanks a lot guys for the continued feedback...really helps!!

thought I would throw my latest mix up here for those of you following along ay home...
Another new lead vocal track, changed the lyrics up a bit for the last verse and tried to bring the lead vocal out in the mix more...cut the verb down on the drums and kicked the guitars up a tad as well...
