Frequency-dependant Compressor

Anybody ever used something like this? If so, how did you set it up? Something like EQ parameter modulation, sidechained to a compressor? Does that even make sense? I suppose maybe a multiband comp would do this but for some reason, it's not working for me.

Basically, I want to compress the high end of a bass guitar or a drum kit slightly more than the low end. Suggestions?

There are things called multi-band compressors. Reaper makes a multiband compressor plugin that I think is still free. You can probably google it and get to their site.

A maul-the-band compressor is precisely what you need.

That said -- There are more - uh - "gentle" options also... Voxengo's Soniformer would be incredibly high on a list of only one plug I'd want to use.

It has one helluva learning curve if you don't have a very solid understanding (of both advanced equalization and dynamics manipulation). But that said, you should have a solid understanding of all that if you're going for a maul-the-band compressor anyway...
