Call me nuts, but you can get a lot of free practice (that means no charge) in listening critically to mixes by getting over to Garageband.com and A/B-ing some bands in several genres. You can even enter your own stuff in the competition for a recording contract based on votes by other reviewers.
I've tried it (reviewing pairs of songs, submitting comments, and answering a few questions about comparisons between the two) and this is WORK! But how else do you expect to learn how to mix? Your votes will help some struggling band in any case or stop some real bozos from perpetrating a scam on the listening public. The power is in your hands.
