Look Mom, I can play!
In Aug's edition of SOS Mag, there is an excelent article by pro-drummer Gavin Harrison on developing and using click tracks, something most of us can learn from.

Gavin is currently touring in the USA and has just let me know where his demo click tracks can be found.

Follow the link at the bottom of the page to download them.....

BTW, for those of you who are interested, his article in SOS is a great read. Embargoed currently on the web site for three months, so get the mag:) Or wait. Or whatever:rolleyes:

Also, check out Gavins credentials whilst you visit his site;)

He am livin da life, man:cool:

Very good, Paul! You go to the head of the class! :) :) :)

Anybody know about anything else like it? I've been searching like crazy for stuff like this.

Moskus, the article is really brilliant, I too have been searching for this kind of stuff, but it wasn't so critical for me cos I only play finger drums with midi.

But the samples loaded into Battery make for an easy click track, adjusting the tempo to suit.

Yeah, but I use the MIDI clicks for percussion, they just need a little adjustment. I can program drums pretty good (IMHO ;)), but percussion is so goddam hard!

Does Battery play MIDI-files?

No, it plays Wav's and soundfonts. Its just a matrix of pads, each assigned to a midi note. You can seperately assign each note/pad to a wav. or soundfont sample. It really needs complimenting with the AKAI MPD 16 drum machine.;)

It can be triggered by midi using Battery as a VST, using the fxpansion wrapper.

What I can't figure out is how to make it see individual banks within soundfonts, the way kontact does. For example, if I load assorted acoustic drum kits into kontakt, I can see all the different kits.

If I do the same with Battery, all I can see loaded is the kit at the top of the bank list.:(

BTW, kontakt is the dogs bollocks of samplers for Sonar users because it is a DXi instrument. Plays wavs, soundfonts, samples, KONTAKT, Gigasampler, EXS, AKAI....anything. Polyphonic and multi timbral. You can change amend each sound with ADHSR envelopes. LFO's too. Over 2 Gig of sounds/samples.

I haven't really had chance to play with it much due to time constraints, but come the Autumn/Winter, I will be exploring its full range of sounds.

So basically it's just like the DR-008, only more expensive? ;)

If click tracks are all you are looking for, use what comes for free with Sonar. I use the music lab looper with VSC. You do not have to like the VSC sounds to get a good click track, because hopefully you are not going to leave the click track in your final mix.

Bloodhound, Yeah, you are right...to a point. When you use a click track with drummers who know what they are doing in a recording studio, (okay, in my dreams I hear you all say:) ), they get very touchy about the sounds you use for click tracks, the number of beats to a 2 bar intro, and how you signal to the drummer where the solos start and finish etc.

For our own use, it doesn't matter so much, but for drummers, its critical to the foundation of the track.

And thats where Gavins sounds and click tracks come in handy;)

Thanks Paul. That may be true. Drummers are very funny people. But then who needs drummers? (joke!)

I haven't met a "normal" drummer yet:) OTOH, I haven't met a "normal" geetarist either:D

WHAT!!! Am me not normal? I just comb my hair that way when I run down the street naked.

And the problem with this is......what?:D Seems like everyday behaviour to me. :)

Well, I for one would have a serious problem with the hair-combing aspect of this behaviour. :)
