I've created this new sticky thread for free and/or open source software recommendations,

URL - https://www.audacityteam.org/
OS - Windows/Linux/MacOS

Please feel free to reply with your own suggestions for editors, full DAWs, virtual instruments, effects, or anything you think is relevant to Home Recording.

I tried using this many years ago. I haven't tried it recently but I would have to assume it has become much better. Looking at their website, looks like it is a serious contender and it is Linux oriented. (That is where I first saw it on a Ubuntu media distro) Plus if you go Linux, you can really use lower end computer hardware.
