I have a second hand Jackson DKMG.

I know how to set up, tune, intone FR trems, however, I can't get this one to come back to tune. It comes back slightly sharp or slightly flat depending on wether I pull the trem up or dive it down.

I have got my locking nut done up, I have triple checked that it was in tune to start with, there are 3 springs fitted and the bridge is more or less flush with the body.

I have had it apart, cleaned it and reassembles it and... still no fix !

Any one else had this experience / know of a fix ?

Im playing 9s

It would help to know what gauge strings you are using, but the things I suggest as possibilities are, not enough springs for the gauge of string, or else they are not tight enough. The other possibility, and the one I find most likely, is that the knife edges are worn. If this is the case, you have to replace the bridge.

At any rate, these are complete guesses, and without seeing it, I have absolutly no way of giving you a useful suggestion, nor does anyone else. Take it to a good repair person, and have them look at it. Only then can you get a good evaluation.

Knife edge ?

The bridge locates onto two studs bolted into the body, that is the only point of contact.

I'm playing 9s and have 3 springs fitted. The tension between the springs and the strings is fine as I have the bridge position where I want it (i.e. not bugged right out of the body).

The only thing I did notice is that the studs that the trem (bridge plate) locates onto are lose in their housing. I tightened these up and fitted a couple of washers to raise the action and stop string buzz and provide a little tension to keep the studs immobile.

However this did not fix it.

The knife edge is the part of the bridge where the bridge touches the studs (Floyd Rose's name for it, not mine). If the metal is not hardened right in that location, it can wear. It can also just wear from use. This is, more often then not, the source of hard to find problems on Floyd Rose trems, and it can not be fixed.

However, if your studs are loose, that is the most likely problem. Replace them. If it is a real Floyd Rose, you can get replacement parts fairly easily. If it is a copy, you may well be screewed, I am afraid to say. It is very difficult to find replacment parts for Floyd copies.

Thanks man, I think it may be time for a major overhaul as I'm not that keen of the EMG Hz 's tone and the body was battered when I got it!

So:

New Body (one or two large dings and I don't like the color) ,
New FR,
New PUS !!!

Poor bloody credit card !!
