Can anybody help me figure out what I’m doing wrong?

I’ve got a Fostex X-12, I plug my guitar to my multieffects pedal, to use it as a preamp, and then to the recorder input.

When I’m in the playback mode the recording and the guitar itself, sound just fine, BUT, whenever I play the REC button, the sound in my headphones gets distorted, I’ve checked the signal input (mic or line level) and it’s good, not all the way up to red lights, the output level coming to the headphones, checked the instruction manual and all seems pretty good, I know there’s something that I’m not doing right, but can’t figure it out.

headphones

could be the headphone preamps ar bad....if it only sounds bad thrught the headphones, .....

Most likely the headphone preamp - Although I'm not very familliar with the Fostex internal setup.

It's going to do that. It's normal. As long as it plays back fine, you're OK. I've had the x-12 for a bit. It will sound kind of tinny and distorted when you hit the record button, especially on distorted guitar, because it brings the volume of what you are playing up. If your playback sounds good, you aren't doing anything wrong, and there is nothing wrong with your signal chain. It's just something you have to get used to.

Thanks for the replies, I really thought it wasn't the headphones output, I guess I'll have to get used to it.

If anyone has the same problem, please share, just like Rokket did!!!!
