Hi everyone...

Just posted three new songs and a re-mix of an old one ("Julie"). Please have a listen if you get the chance....thanks!

P.S. Half of the tracks were recorded on my Akai DPS16 deck, while the other half were done through a PC, using Sonar. Main vocal mic was the SP C1....SM57s on the guitar amps. Not sure about the drum mics.

haven't you heard: sounds great till the drums come in then it sounds like shit. Sorry man, you recorded this and don't know what mic's were used on the kit? You could have used radioshack mics if you were gonna overproduce them that much.

Are the drums programed? That's not a sin you know!

<edit>

Listened to JULIE. It's the room. I don't like the room the drums were recorded in. I'll guess at a small dry room with added verb to make it sound better...isn't it always the way. The kick needs more bottom end, it's all punch and no kick. Toms ar burried for my personal liking, overheads are a bit swishy with no real defenition. Whole thing sounds a bit clinical/sterile

Thanks for listening, and thanks for the feedback.....

No, I didn't record the drums. The drums and some other basic tracks were recorded at another band member's place (on the PC/Sonar). A lot of the vocals and acoustic stuff was recorded at my place (on the Akai).

The room was/is medium-size...I wouldn't call it small. Yes, we added reverb (as is always the way).

Again, I appreciate the feedback! All criticism is constructive, as far as I'm concerned....

The drums are kind of weak. The vocal on haven't you heard has lots of pitch problems. It's better on beauty, but the drums are still weak.

Loved it

Bob,

I took a listen to your tune's, they sound great. I especially enjoyed "Everyday" and "Haven't You Heard". I saw that LemonTree gave you some criticism for the entrence of the drums in "Haven't", I think its a rather clever way to bring the band in on what starts out as a power ballad, but ends up as a nice pop tune. I also noticed that you were given negative feedback on the drum sound overall.....Don't listen to those guys. Drum's are probably the hardest instrument to get a good, professional sound on, especially when your using real drums as opposed to a drum machine. I believe there is alot to be said for having a live mic'ed up kit on your recordings.

Drum machines are for Hip hop, Rock and Roll bands use real kits......(im talking to you "ROCKERBOB") Great Job Shermans!

Thanks, Fool! I (we) appreciate the feedback. Would love to hear some of your stuff sometime.

You know, the drum tracks sound like they're totally salvageable with a bit of EQ work. Like that snare sound on "Haven't You Heard," I mean...you KNOW it sounds like ass, right? But all it needs is for that HONKING boxiness to be subtracted out of it (sounds like somewhere between 900Hz and 2K)...and boost the top end of the snare a bit when you do it. That one minor change will make a WORLD of difference. Not sure if the kick could sound great or not, but it could sound tons better.

To me, drums are the instrument most apt to be saved by EQ. With acoustic string instruments, if all the overtones aren't there to begin with, I find it tough to make it sound decent...but with drums, it seems to be a lot easier.

Anyway...I really think that's the biggest problem, and I think it could definitely be subdued with some work.

thanks for posting.

"Everyday" could use more low end and less on the top all the way around. It just sounds kinda' thin...nice one though.

drum sounds

Hey Chrisharris,

Your comments are reasonable, im a little less technical than yourself when it comes to frequencies and such, but I follow what your saying about the snare on Bob's songs. Unfortunitly I have trouble listening with such detail on my computer monitors. I would say that, I myself have had some frustration with drummers in general, I believe that any eq problems should be fixed at the source......with the drummers tunning of the snare. There is only so much post recording production that you can do, it needs to be recorded properly in the first place, otherwise your gonna be fighting a very uphill battle (Like Bob seems to be in right now).

Again, Bob, nice job. I just listened to Beauty from Afar....Are those Bagpipes?

Yeah, I totally agree. But I can't tell you the number of times I've gotten drum tracks from somebody that sounded really disappointing, but that totally came to life with a little attention to detail. Like in this case, it sounds like the guy was at least whacking the snot out of the snare, so all the audio information is in that track...it's just a matter of shaping it a bit. I can't say the same thing about acoustic guitars or distorted electrics though. No drum tracks are ever going to sound "great" if they're not recorded well...but these can sound a lot better.

Thanks, CH and Fool....

Re: the bagpipes...yes, Fool, those are actual bagpipes. The bass player in the band is a really talented kid...also plays some cello, keyboards and percussion on the cd.

We'll work on that drum sound. I'm starting to agree....the drums sound like.....ass!
