Oh I don't know... I don't really agree with the BEST, GOOD CHEAPER, and OTHER list and etc... but cool idea.

Ummm..it looks to to me like the guy is a total fool on pretty much every subject.
Sorry. :(

On a deeper look the guy has some reasonable stuff, actually, but it's all way too specific. And a bunch of it is just plain wrong and contradictory.
And that mic list is just silly.

the EQ suggestions are alright... not too specific, but gives a nice picture that not many other websites give? or do they? it's more straightforward than anyone on this bbs, always naysaying and being wicked vague like "oh it all depends on the project", yeah well at least give me a starting point to work with, you know. tell me if I want to add air or sparkle to cymbals to boost a bit of the higher range EQ. I'm not born knowing that.

All right, I'll give you that. He does have a lot of the general ranges right. And I agree, a lot of times people don't give that basic info. Wooliness is around 250. Presence is 1-5k. Warmth is between those, generally 4-800. But in the same vein, "Cut 100hz by 7db" is just not going to work. It probly worked for him once, and so it made the list of "EQ tips".

If you want some general frequency stuff to look at, this is pretty good.

CM EQ basics

I wasn't jumping on you, though I did squash that guy. There is enough misinformation on his site to be annoying to me, that's all.

That's is a good one. I like this one too but I can't remember exactly where I found it. Good EQ chart for newbies

just looked through a couple of subjects. Nothing looks too far fetched but there are a few things this person should of left out.

Like the best mics and stuff. I just did a large session for drums (with Xstatic) and we didnt use a single mic they said was the best for drums and we got excellent results.

I was happy to see the Neumann TLM193 listed as a best for vocals mics though because i have one. :D

Yeah, I shouldn't have jumped so hard. I guess I just happened to see all the stupid stuff he said first. :D

Electric guitars-
To get rid of boxiness- cut 100-250
To fatten- boost 100-250

You are fucked if it's thin and boxy. :) If it's both, it's time to move the mic.

And "Don't boost above 4k unless the guitar is DI'd". What is that about?

And setting threshold on compressors completley depends on how hot the signal going in is. Just saying "start at -7" is meaningless.

So yeah, there is some really good info, like the general freq ranges and how they affect different sources, but also much mumbo-jumbo.

Thanks

Thank you Boingoman and DOT for the informative links.

Thank you Enchilada for the frequency Chart download.

I am a newbie and I'm trying to absorb as much info as I can.

Any more of these types of recording info websites would be greatly appreciated.

John
