Hey Nick... I have seen Radio Shack sell what was esentially Casio keyboards with just different model names on them...I suspect this is the case in this situation also...I'm not putting down Casio, just letting you know..."Home" keyboards have come along way in sound quality over the last decade and I think they can be useful in making music (even a Casio)...In this price range though I lean toward Yamaha keyboards. Here is a link to one (PSR-273) with decent features (61 full-size keys, 32 note polyphony, touch response, MIDI) that is not much more in price than the Radio Shack. Right now they throw in the adapter (which lets you plug the keyboard into an outlet and saves your batteries) for free.

Hi,
I think you should try a bunch of keyboards and see how they feel. I definitely think the yamaha that mawtangent is a better option for just a little more (although I was unable to open up the link... it was taking too long so I stopped it. ) They have a lot of keyboards in guitar center and samash you can try them out. They have all different price ranges. Have you decided that you want to spend $120, or is that just the one you ran into and kind of liked? Did you try it out? The sounds you are interested in, and the feel is important. You should feel comfortable when playing it. I've had issues with keyboards that didn't have good touch sensitivity, so playing softer or louder was difficult. You can also find something cheap on ebay used.
hope you find what you are looking for...

There are several factors to consider when buying a keyboard synth - sound quality, feel (weighted, touch sensitive, after touch, etc), MIDI applications, on board F/X, sequencing, etc. etc.

If you are a novice keyboard player and simply want some basic pad sounds, a $120 Rat Shack may do. If you wnat/need realistic accoustic sounds (piano, organ, etc) a $120 likely won't do it. In particular, piano sounds depend on touch response (which I suspect a $120 box won't have.

I sugeest you try a few keyboards (including some that are likely out of your cost range) just to get some idea what the sounds, feel and features can and can't do. If you then decide the Rat Shack will do the job, so be it - however, if you then decide the Rat Shack will force too many compromises, perhaps you are better off waiting until you can afford soumething better.

I personally doubt that a $120 keyboard will provide the sounds and feel that someone needs for decent recorded sounds, however,m it probably has beeter sounds than the 1st keyboard I bought (about 30 years ago) a Juno 6 that ran about $1200.

the main reason why i wanted to get this keyboard is because i have a 20 dollar gift certificate to radio shack ...i have a coupond that says if you spend 40 bucks or more you get 10 off....and a friend said he'd give me 20 bucks towards it ....and one more thing its on sale for 70 bucks..so after all of that i could end up getting it for 20 bucks!

ps the reason why my friend is willing to give me 20 bucks towads it is because he will be the only one to play it..i dont even know how to play i just want it for the studio

$120? And you've got coupons? Get it! A little chorus and it'll be fine.

If it will only cost you that little and since it has some MIDI you probably can't go too wrong - if at a later date you decide you want something better you can still use the Rat Shack for extra sounds.

Hey man, you have to start somewhere. I started with a Yamaha PSR- or PRS-something.

(And now lookie what I got:

)

Once you get and start applying it, you'll figure out quickly what its limitations are.

Get it, have fun, learn lots. Good luck!

thanks guys! i did buy it ...but i still have to hook my computer back up...ill let you guys no how it sounds
