Fostex VF80+Tascam 244 Audio Interface recommendations

Last time I was around I was slowly learning more about tracking, connecting stuff and what not. Now I have a new machine which is a Fostex VF80 CD-R machine!! Which is pretty sweet stuff imo, love it, so many great effects and simple mixing. I’ve already made songs on it that I feel are ready to be made into an EP. The thing is, are there any hopefully cheap recommendations for usb audio interfaces you guys have? I recently bought an apogee duet FireWire but turns out my Mac no longer supports it which hurt me but live as ya learn. I would also like the audio interface to work on my Tascam 244, as I also have recordings on that ready to import to the computer. From my understanding, please correct if I’m wrong but for the VF80, they connect to the interface using SPDIF connections? any recommendations will be helpful !

S/PDIF connections USED to be common on audio interfaces (as did MIDI!) but no longer. If you can find one I can heartily recommend the Native Instruments KA6 sadly no longer available new.

I have waded through some of the Thomann pages on AIs and only two seem to have S/PDIF at under £200* . The Focusrite 8i6 and the Behringer UMC 1820. I have one decoding the optical S/PDIF out of my FSTV and it sounds superb through my Tannoy 5As. Get one of those and many more AIs become available to you including my all time favourite the MOTU M4.

* "Cheap" is of course a personal matter! Hence my self imposed figure of £200.

This should be fairly new hopefully could work with a Mac that’s up to date, not like my apogee.

Bugger! However there are many, many versions of that S/PDIF converter in the market I bet you could find similar and I also bet they are all the same PCB out of the same factory!
The KA6 should serve you well. I know it works fine on mac and indeed Linux. One problem is that the S/PDIF is RCA whereas I am pretty sure the Fostex is only optical? The converters for this are very cheap, just a "hex switch" in a box, I have a couple somewhere.
