does anyone have experience with these? i have looked at a few digital recorders in this price range and this one seems to stick out the most.

I bought one in January and love it. Best bang for the bux hands down in the price range. None of the others will allow you to allow you to record 8 Tracks at once out of the box. None of the others are easily expandable to 16 Tracks at once. None of the others in the price range allows you to use External Effects.

If you want a true Multitracking DAW, go for it. It does a great job.

Plus an added bonus...

With the purchase of any Fostex recorder (VF160/VF80/MR8) comes the opportunity of getting great advise on this board -- by far the best for us Fostex users!

I own a VF80, which is a baby VF160, and I'm very impressed. Fostex manuals are not very well translated from the Japanese, and US customer service is not always applauded by some. But the products, in my view, are excellent.

Do a search and you should be able to find some reviews of the 160...

cheers! i know a guy that got a VF16CD today, seems to like it :) so i guess ill probably get one. :) after ive had a look at it in the flesh

Keep in mind the VF160 and the VF16 are similar, but not the same. The 160 is a further edition of the 16...

In theory...

so in theory the VF160 should be better?

I don't own either, but my understanding is that there were some updates (one area being effects) that would make the VF160 better. This is not to knock the 16. The 16 and 160 are stablemates, but I believe Fostex promotes the 160 as an improved version of the 16. One would assume it is.

I own a VF80 which I know is an improved version of the VF08. If say Fostex comes out with a VF90, I would assume it's a further development of what I now have... Sometimes there are exceptions to this principle, but they are just that, exceptions.

I believe the reviews of the 160 often reference it's roots in the 16... Owners of the 160 probably can say more about it's relationship to the 16.

Any thoughts on a comparison between the VF 160 and the Yamaha AW 16G? I'm thinking of buying one of these type of units and I'm not really sure of feature differences, easiest to use - learn, etc.

I think if you post a separate thread with this in the title (VF160 vs. Yamaha AW16G) you'll get some quality responses. I forget who, but I recollect someone having a view on this. Also, there is a site specifically dedicated to the AW16G. I think reading the posts there is very informative. www.AW16.com

vf160 happy owner

I went for the vf160 and am delighted with it. To be honest i have never yet read a post from anyone who baught one and regrets it. There may be some owner out there who doesn't like the vf160, but I haven't yet found them yet! I've seen lots of posts from people who love the machine.

Here's a dedicated vf16/vf160 forum...

with lots of old posts to search through.

but then again i have without noticing it. Brochures tend to be a little touch bias, they could say "the best" but thats their opinion, so im looking for other folks opinions. Is that not what this forum is for?

Read the brochures...

The brochures will give you basic information like how many effects, how many tacks it can record, and some technical specifictions, just ignore the bits which say how fantastic it all is....WE will tell you that here!

The brochures and the manaual will answer all of the basic questions you may have, then you can ask for more detail here and in the other forum I suggested above, which if you search through the archive you'll probably find most of the answers there.

Hope this helps you to decide.
