Sure wish there were some more old foggies like myself around this neck of the woods. But yeah the more people getting into digital . does bring down the prices for us quite a bit . Yahoo . Dig on boys. Anyway I've got an R8 with some definite speed problems and was wondering if anyone could suggest some ideas for me to deal with this . I've got some electronic skills , but not enough to take on this machine , I don't think. Do I need to send it to Fostex . or would a local repair shop be able to handle this machine ? I was really liking this machine up until the speed problems started.

Sounds like you may have a belt slipping. Or possibly a bad cap somewhere in there.

Have the belts ever been replaced? have you let the machine sit a long time between uses? How's the pinch roller looking? Is it all shiney?

DON'T send your machine to Emmit's Fix-it shop. Find a Deck-Tech somewhere that knows your machine.

My A8 had trouble with the pinch roller: it was shiny smooth and the tape slipped while playing. If your R8's roller is like this, you may want to try fitting a new one yourself.

Ditto any internal rubberware - this is more likely if fast wind has also started to lose its will to live.

If it has speed problems it's rarely anything electronic, so poor electronic skills is not a problem. But you will need a service manual and typically a set of weird measureing instruments to measure takeup force and such. :)

So unless you enjoy fiddling yourself, I agree with the above recommendation of finding somebody who does repair on these for maintenance. They can go through the whole machine to make sure it's tip-top if you want.

Thank you very much everybody, I've been home trying to figure all this stuff out . I've actually got a lot of questions from week to week . I guess I'm gonna try and find a local repair guy who I can trust . Problem is , I don't know any yet. But I'll be talkin to you guys again for sure . Analog Rules Shhhhhhhhhhh
