Long-time reader of these boards that's eager for your help--

THE PROBLEM: When I press PLAY on my 1/4" Fostex R8 tape machine, the rewind and fast-forward motors are both activated at high speed. (The capstan motor also runs like it should, and the pinch roller is squeezed against the capstan like it should, too.)

BACKGROUND: The machine is in good shape (new pinch roller, capstan belt) and had been working until a few days ago. I took the front off to examine the malfunctional FF pulley (a standard problem with the machine which I had been working around), and I think I must have jostled something because the problem started then.

STOP, FF, and REWIND, all seem to be working, although holding REWIND to do slow-rewind does not seem to be working (and it was before).

Could this be mechanical? I think it may have to do with the odd-shaped white center gear that the pinch-roller arm rotates on when the machine switches gears.

Could it be electronic? If so, what would have caused it and what can I do? I opened the back and everything seems calm back there.

Thanks for any insight you can give me. I'm at my wits end here.
