Any one know anything about this unit? Can it record all 8 tracks at once?

Oh, and what size of tape does it use?

hey monty, how do you like your model 80? I'd like to get a machine that has 8 track simultaneous record -- I'd like to record live sometime.
regebro - yeah head wear and alignment is something I'll have to look into. Hopefully I'll have enough money to get the heads relapped and aligned...
Thanks guys

Yes it's 1/4". I'm pretty sure the R8 can only record on 4 tracks at one time, but I might be wrong. Maybe they did two different models, like with the A-8 which have a "Live Recording" version that can record on all tracks at one time.

I assume that you are in the process of byuing one? I have an A-8LR, which is an excellent machine. The R8 is basically a newer version of the A-8 and is most likely quite excellent too. Things to check before buying is tape-wear. If the head is worn its no disaster, but you can't realign the tape head without relapping the head, so thats a risk for an extra cost. So if there is tape wear, you must check that the head is properly aligned before buying it. (I was lucky. I didn't check, but the tape is properly aligned.. Phew! ).

I have an R8 and YES you can record all 8 tracks at once! 1/4" tape, 7" reel. Its a good machine.

I like it. I've had it for 10 years or so. No wear when I got it. I've used it very little. It came with a remote control and rack ears so it goes into a large rack I have with wheels. I like it for distorted guitar sounds. If I could synch it to Cakewalk it would be nice. I've been experimenting, recording on the Fostex, then copying to Cakewalk.

yeah, its too bad a lot of older things don't have good syncing options - itd be great to buy a couple 8trk r2r's and suddenly have a 16 track :D

Well, for $1,500.00 you can buy used
16-Track Reel to reel machines all day long!
Just look on Ebay!
I see both Tascam and Fostex 1/2" Machines on there all the time going for $1,500.00 or less.

I mean, $1,500.00 really isn't a ton of money for getting into what could be considered PRO Home Recording.
The main problem with these machines is noise.
