For those who have been following my threads, I am a moving target.

At first I was thinking of the Tascam Porta2, then the 414MK3 or the 424MK3, now I'm considering the Fostex MR8.

I know I am breaking my cardinal rule and also the advice of some of the members on this board, but now I think going digital may be the way to go.

With digital multi-trackers, do I really need to have a PC? From briefly reading the manual for the Fostex MR8, I can mixdown to an analog recording equipment. If that's the case, is a PC really required?

Yo Knop:

Output of digital boxes is kind of interesting. With my 2816 I can output 24 bit recordings to tape -- can't burn a CD with 24 bit but can output it.

You might think about a DAT deck to output your stuff. I'm not very familiar with the Gear you're using but I'm sure you'll have fun.

I've output stuff to tape for years from the old Tascam 488 MKII to the Yam minidisc MD8.

But, burning those CD's in 16 bit is really fun.

Quality of the Output

Is the quality of the recording better, worse, or the same if the recording gear is digital vs analog?

For example, consider that the mixdown is to an analog equipment, will the Tascam 414MKII or the Fostex MR8 produce a better sound or would it be the same?

I really think digital gear processes sound much better; what you send your mix to will vary with the quality of the gear.

But, you can do good stuff one way or another; digital just makes it easier to get a quality sound in the final push.

A DAT will give you good results. I know that PC programs will do a good job but I don't use that venue. The DAW of whatever will give you a good product.

You might try to get a live audition at a vendor's store or a friend's pad.

You have many choices....just view this site and it kind of boggles the mind.

But, whichever way you go, you will have fun and the learning process never ends.

hey Knoph,
Always a pleasure to greet a fellow Knophler fan. I am getting a MR-8 for christmas, after much deliberation (with myself) I decided on the MR-8. I will be using it with a PC via mixing board. The PC will allow me to use MIDI and burn cd's...theoretically. Of course no results until the fat man shows on the 25th. I'll keep you posted.
