I recently purchased a Fostex MR16/HD-CD and so far am having a blast with it. Admittedly, I am a raw newbie to all of this. The last time I did any kind of recording, home or club, was, dare I say it, back in the late 70's. 
Anyhoo .. I'm getting a good grasp of the unit and so far have produced some very raw 4 track straight recording. 1 guitar, 1 bass, 1 female vocalist and an "ambience" mic track.
The set up is like this: mics are dedicated to instruments and vocalist. Audio is piped out as stereo signal to Fender 250 portable PA.
What I'd like to know is would an outboard mixer, more than 4 mics, be out of the question right now? If not, then what mixer would be recommended?
