i record vocals on this machine and there are a group of buttons under "mastering effects". one of them is "powerful". i really like this one because it makes my voice sound thicker and more powerful. So i turn this effect on and like the sound as i am listening to what i have recorded. But, when i transfer the wav files to my computer the effect is not there... how can i get that effect permenantly be added to vocals?

Thank you very much for your help

you cant....the only way to preserve the effects on the fostex is to dump the song directly from one of its outs except the usb or optical...i usually kept sketches of my stuff before dumping by wiring a minidisc recorder to the headphones out, worked pretty well. the headphones out can be considered a normal out i guess, not the best but still an out. problem is, its gonna sound really cool on headphones, but if u put that mix into speakers, itll sound like shit..headphones have better bass response (i think) than crappy speakers. anyway, thats the only way to retain the effects, basically you can only retain the effects if u dump the song somewhere while its playing back..

either way, if you're dumping to the computer get some kind of free software that has some basic effects...anything will sound better than those crappy effects on the mr8. the powerful tone is kind of misleading..i know what you're saying...it like waves the reverb and its tick..i know..its cool..but itll sound like shit on speakers, trust me. that cool efect is actully cause the reverb is so bad it kind of eats the signal every 2 seconds. works great if you're trying to play sometimes by my bloody valentine though! :D

u can even dump the whole mix to a k7 recorder, it doesnt have to be a minidisc. just plug the headphone out into something that records. just make sure u have the mix like u want it first...then playback and press record.

good luck.

Yo Freeshyne- Export the line output to the the line input on a good soundcard as an analog signal, rather than as a digital file, and everything you hear should be there.-Richie

thank you for ur replies. diogo, im glad u toldme that the powerful effect really is not that good.. saves a lot of time. I know that software can give u much better effects, but im using cool edit (i no.. lol) and i cant really find an effect that really makes the vocals stronger. Do u no of any such effects on cooledit or nething? thanks a lot

cool edit has some pretty decent reverbs..u just have to know where to go...full reverb usually does pretty good, reverb is pretty good too, quickverb i dunno, never use it..but there's one thing though Freeshyne..if you're using the pres on the mr8 just forget about it..there's no way the vocals are going to sound better...u really need an outboard pre...i got night and day results with my Maudio DMP3 once i got it..there's just no comparison (im sellin it :D its 2 months old)..

cool edit is what i use too..your problem seems to be where you think the trouble is coming from...its in the pres, and you're thinking its the effects...if u like the warbling effect go with that, experiment...but if you're dumping to the puter u have to get some outboard pre...to at least give some dimension to the sound...the internal mr8 pres are beyond shitty man, its no joke..i personally cant even touch the thing anymore, even with my DMP3. the converters are not that bad, with an outboard pre u can get pretty decent sounds...but with that its hard...unless u dump into something that will disguise it a bit..like a tape recorder, or a minidisc, etc..

by "pre" do u mean pre-amp? with all those effects and such? Are u recommending i put my mic in to the preamp and from their record to the mr8? if so, what connection do u use from the preamp to the mr8? Im sorry man, im really slow on the uptake for this music stuff

thanks again diogo.

ps. if u dont us mr8 wit ur preamp, what do u use? do u go straight to comp?

Freeshine,

yes im sorry..pre is preamp, yes. no, the preamp has no effects, it just boosts the mic signal to something useful, unlike the trim button on the mr8.

yes, u should put the mic in the preamp, and the preamp into the mr8, then turn the trim on the mr8 all the way down and you're set.

i use the mr8 with the preamp, its impossible not to cause the mr8 has crappy preamps. i meant i dont use them both anymore and i havent tracked in a while cause im fed up with the mr8, this machine doesnt work for me anymore, even with the outboard preamp that gives it great sound quality.

but no, i would never go direct into a pc card. i just meant the mr8 (with the preamp) is not working for me anymore..sometimes i just get fed up with a piece of gear and thats that..its over, i cant take anything out of it anymore :/ too bad everything is new!

if you want an outboard preamp, im selling mine (just a sugestion! im not a seller) wich is probly the best entry level preamp u can get. its the Maudio DMP3. its ideal to use with the mr8 and thats why i had it. gets great results and your vocals wont sound thin anymore. when u get somekind of preamp you'll see that cool edit is really a pretty good program!

I'm pretty much with diogo on this (DMP3/MR8), except I'm still mucking with the MR8, because it's all I will have for a while (recording gear).

Freeshyne~ by the way, there is a pretty good Fostex forum here at HR.com.
Check it out, and don't forget about the search function :)
Many MR8 issues have been beaten to DEATH!!! And much info is available here.
