I just bought a Fostex FD8 with an external iomega 100mb zip drive. Can I attach an external 250mb drive instead? The user manual lists iomega 100mb or syquest ezflyer 250mb, but I guess the iomega 250mb wasn't around back in '98.
I'm new to all this and bought this unit as a cheap way to get into home recording. I can get a 250mb iomega drive with several discs on ebay for less than a pack of 100mb disks!

Yes.. I use a Iomega Zip 250 drive it will let you have 45min max on each disk depending how long the tracks are... If you look closely you might a good deal on ebay

Thanks Twitch. Can I use the same cable that I have with my 100mb drive to connect a new 250MB drive? The 250MB drives I've seen on eBay (and there are some REAL bargains) have USB cables. ps Plato rocks!

Yes you can, as long as it's a for sure fit, but most will already come with a cable (even off of ebay).. Now as for the USB I would stick with the original Scsi unless you want to try out the USB, I guess whatever would fit your needs.

ps Plato rocks!
Thanks

Let me know if everything works out for you.. Happy recording

Which 250mb drive do you have? Is it an scsi, because the manual only refers to that, but of course back in '98 that was al there was. The drives i have seen on ebay are parallel, and of course all the sellers think only of computer applications, not multitrackers. This is all a bit new to me, and I really appreciate your advice. I just don't want to buy a drive and find it doesn't work.

I have the Iomega 250 old school SCSI drive with cable and terminator switch

I should have bought one with the HD installed.. But I guess I can always do it myself in the future, but I take mine along for recording singers and hip-hop artist then bring it back to my much much larger studio.. So it's always in the trunk of my car still in the original box I might add..

The zip 250's have worked great for me. The time remain display claims I get 1 hour 58 minutes on a freshly formatted disk. Are you getting the 45 minute capacity from the display, or from experience? Are you formatting in normal or master mode?

I've been wondering if external scsi drives are going to become obsolete and hard to find. My drive has worked faithfully since I bought it with the FD-8 how many ever years ago (10ish I think)

Have you ever used the insert jack on the back panel? I've been trying to attach a compressor as the manual suggests, but can't get it to work.

I'm getting it from both the display and the experience, it's in master mode 1..

I think very soon they will be obsolete, SCSI was so common in the 80's and 90's that I think you can and will still find some out there.. It's like those floppy drives you know, you can still get them. but you can install your own HD open it up and it has the pins an connector inside.

No.. but I will try.. Do you have your tip and send connectors plugged in right? I'm sure you are using a Y-cable also

Insert jack

Yeah, I was using a Y connector. As soon as I plug in, it overrides the input jacks for the channel, both front and rear. Tried swapping the input and output from left to right. Nothing.

I've been using normal mode for all disks. Think I'll start using master mode in case I ever get some performances good enough to take the to studio. Feeling reasonably competent with using the board, but still ain't satisfied with my playing. Shameless plug: you can check out my FD-8 work at

Been trying to find the best way to add compression while recording. Was hoping the insert jack would work. If I want to put more than one effect on a track, I've been pinging to another track with effect, then doing it again to add the next effect. Still working on getting good sound. Using a behringer modulizer pro dsp1200p because I got it cheap at a pawn shop. I guess if you add "pro" to anything, it sounds impressive.

I like you Goodbye song.. my only suggestion is to overlay some parts I think it would sound great.. and alittle eq on the vocal and your good to go..There is nothing wrong using behringer gear I have some myself.. Are you transfering from FD8 to PC for editing or just using the FD8? You could buy a cheap $40 dollar behringer mixer or get it for $25 off of ebay and connect your compressor to the mixer then run your tracks out and re-record them using compression or any other effects also..
