Some friends of mine own a Fostex DMT-8 and I'm trying to help them produce a demo CD from my computer. However, I don't know the first thing about what I need to do to hook the multitracker to my soundcard. Can anyone help me out with the type of cord I'll need to buy? Thanks.

The Fostex is a stand alone recorder.
It has a "Hard disk" for internal storage of
Data (Music). You should use it by itself to record 8 tracks of uncompressed digital audio. You need to playback your recordings through headphones or a stereo amp/speaker system. It is not made to operate with a sound card. It doesn't need any external sound scource.

If you want to transfer your recordings from the Fostex to the computer for storage, you will need some "RCA" to whatever cables your sound card input takes (1/8" most likely). Then you could edit or add tracks to these originals. You would need 8 inputs into your sound card to separate the tracks. Other wise you could take the stereo mix L/R outputs from the Fostex into your computer. You would have to set levels and EQ during this process, and then you will not be able to change them relative to each other. This would be a sort of stereo master track. on your computer
hard drive.
