I got frustrated with Fostex for not letting anyone know what CD is in their machine, so here it is:
Teac CD: W224E-A93-U

CD1A drive

In my VF160 it's a TEAC CD-W28E, and posts on other boards have named others, including plextors, apparently.
I wonder what the difference is?

Knowing what alternatives are available could be useful if you need to replace the drive - much cheaper - but not so useful if you are fitting for the first time.

Would it make a difference what CD drive goes in there? I have the MR-8, but was thinking of getting the VF160. If the drive craps out, can it be replaced with any CD drive? Or is it configured in a different way than an internal CD drive on a pc or laptop? Just curious...

The burner in my VF160 is a Plextor, not a TEAC. I doubt if it makes a difference, but obviously if replacement was an issue, you'd want to know what's compatible.

I also doubt if the CDR drive breaking down is going to be an issue, but anything is possible.

This thread inspired me to try and pout my old ibook's sony drive in and give it a shot. The recorder recognized the drive, and would go as far as to begin to burn, but then immediately displays an error message. This may also be because it is a cd-rw/dvd drive...

just thought id share.

Thanks. I was wondering. I had a CD-RW drive go down on me on my pc, so I know they can crap out. If I did get one, I'd want to know that I didn't have to search the heavens to find a replacement.

blahhhhhhhh

Ok, so as i said before, my laptop's old sony allllmost worked. I won the TEAC CD-W28E that can apparently be found in some vf16's ( i have a vf80, but i figured the OS's must be similar if not the same) off of ebay for like $25 and popped it in, and powered up. The led's on the face started lighting up and i heard it spin. Then the screen on my vf80 said "cdrw not mounted" follwed by a prompt saying "no disc"...
apparently whenever htis teac is plugged in, my unit cant access my hard drive. Definately a weird response... as soon as i unplug the cddrive, the recorder functions properly. I find it strange i had more success with a non-confirmed cdrw/dvd drive than the teac. If anyone knows a burner that will work with the vf80 and isnt a horribly tyrannic rip-off please let me and everyone else know!

My VF80 had a Plextor burner. I can't say what model number.
