I was wondering if you think this 16 track reel to reel is worth fixing. I paid $800.00 for it from a local music store and they just took it in and didn't get a chance to demo it. When I bought tape for it I found that the tranport moves clockwise when you push start. In otherwords, it plays in reverse. I took it to a authorized fostex dealer and they told me they could get this machine running just like new but for a handsome $350.00 - $450.00 so my total investment would be around $1200.00. This includes fixing everything and doing the normal maintenace required when servicing. As for the music store I plan on talking to the owner about getting atleast $100.00 or so back or I can return it and get my full refund. What do you think?

I say sell it (return it) and buy a fostex 8 track digital. I know this might be the wrong forum to make this comment but that is what I would do!

I understand that, but I already have 16 tracks of Adat xt, Also a Masterlink, I am just wondering if this machine is worth fixing. I'd like to have 16 tracks digital and 16 tracks analog that way my future clients have more than one recording medium to choose from. Thanks.

No, it isn't worth fixing that. Get a newer E16, or G16 is better. Or look for a Tascam MSR16. But with 16 tracks of ADAT XT do you really need that many more? if you are trying to get more why not just get another ADAT XT? If you are looking for going just pure analog, i would look at another deck besides the B16. Analog and ADATs will have a hard time syncing to eachother, and you will pay BIG $$$ to get them to play nicely together.

Thanks for the reply, I already took the plunge and thankfully the repair didn't cost me $450.00. I paid $100.00 to fix it and it included all maintenance issues. So, I have $800.00 in the reel to reel.I understand the concept of buying another adat but my present board will only handle 16 tracks. I decided I wanted analog and digital probably out of stupidity. I figured I could record drums to analog.Really, I wanted reel to reel so I could learn more about working with analog and hopefully utilize both formats to the best of my abilities.I traded a pearl export drum kit for the reel to reel. Eventially if I get to the point where I need more than 16 tracks then I'll have to upgrade my board and I'll add another adat. As far as synching them together I know this is certainly an issue. I was thinking about recording drum tracks analog then recording them to adat then just working in the digital environment from there. What do you think?

ok for that price that isn't so bad. I bought an E16 with dolby C for $800 total. It is one SWEET machine. really really is, you can get amazing drum sounds out of it, and vocals etc etc. Be careful with hitting the tape too hard, there is headroom for analog "warmth" but not very much. :) i had a B16 before that, but soon learnt to sell it in favour of the E16.
