Hi there,
Old r2r players/recorders found in lofts usually need some kind of attention.
Belts degrade, anything rubber can perish, motors and solenoids can seize, springs can stretch, brakes can bind on, components can die, etc etc.

Many people suggest a recap or at least an inspection of power caps before even turning on a unit that's been standing idle for years.

The mixing desk isn't just as much of a worry, but you'd still want to be sure that the pots and faders work without a hitch.
Without known condition it's very hard to put a value on something like that.

I recently processed about 6 R2R machines that had been dry stored for 10-20 years. None of them worked straight off.

What model is the mixer?
Tell us more. :)

Hey thanks for your reply

Its a model A4 Fostex and Fostex 350 series 8 track mixer

I fired them up and cleaned the mixer sliders the tape which was
from my old prog rock band plays but is sticking in bits probably be
ok with a new tape cleaned the heads etc doesent look too bad to me
as I had them wrapped in bin bags

so would £100 be to much for them both ??

There are one of each on eBay at the minute. It might be worth watching them and seeing what they go for; give yourself an idea.

Forgive me if everyone knows this, but you can filter ebay search for ended listings only.
I use it all the time to get an accurate idea of what things sell for.

It rules out all those high price jokers who never actually make a sale.

hey , yes I think I may keep them for now after going through my old recordings I was surprised how warm, organic, real , everything sounded 16 years using moderm software to record really transforms your expectations of what music should sound like ,almost like listening to a 33RPM LP vs IPOD mmm
things have changed, there is mo comparison on how easy everything now is to record etc but sure sounds good listening to a tape rewind like pnky and perky maybe the chianti is affecting my judgement LOL

And no I did not know about EBAY filters for final price that really sounds useful

thanks for your help Guys

I would definitely keep them, service them a bit, get some new tape and put them to use.

I had the Fostex R8 years ago and I really miss it since I sold it. I will get another one day. Computers and DAW's are great but you can't beat that sound of tape.
