Kind of off topic, but I know there are a few of you out there who either owned, or considered, the Tascam PS5 before going with the MR-8. As you know, the PS5 suffered from early bugs that would destroy recordings, and contains some incredibly stupid design flaws. There have been raging debates on the Tascam site, with a small group of loyal users claiming that since the OS is upgradable, the PS5 will grow into this incredible platform.

Well - Tascam just announced version 2.0 of their OS (the first major release was 1.13 that fixed some of the nastier problems) and it offers basically nothing new. Clearly the PS5 was a brain-dead piece of gear with serious hardware limitations that was covered up with some "questionable" marketing hype.

On another front, they did listen to early PS5 complaints and are releasing a thing that's like a CD player with built-in guitar effects - they say it's for learning songs, but it looks like a cool solution for guitarists that play live with backing tracks.

I almost bought the PS5, until I heard demo's from the people who recorded with it. I decided that for the same price, I can get the MR-8 AND a Boss DR-5 sequencer/drum machine (which sound way better than those corny sorry excuses for song samples that you cannot create true music with anyway) It simply was not going to do what I needed it to do. I spent 4 months researching digital studio's in this price range before making my decision to go with the MR-8.

I think the community idea is great though, do be able to co-write with other users using their web site community is brilliant. But...then I listened to collaborative efforts and again realized that I wouldn't want any of them to defile my music:) I mean how do you tell some one "Thanks for taking a week to write and record a guitar part to my song, but I think it sucks and I deleted it."

I WISH that fostex had such a great community on their webite to support the mR-8 though. The tascam forum is awsome, while us MR-8 owners are like little orphans who banded togther is a street corner.

Yeah, but this is at least a decent little corner to be orphans on.

Clif - I'm so glad you said something about the "creations" from Tascam users. During my heated debates up there I was so tempted, but always resisted taking a shot like:

"Just like AOL let a lot of people on the internet that shouldn't be there, the PS5 has made it way too easy to share music that should never have been created..."

I think my favorite was still the guy looking to remake "Stairway To Heaven". Yikes!

Their forum is awfully quiet on the topic of the 2.0 release, though. I think people are simply stunned that the truth is that box isn't going anywhere.

This really is like a street corner - I have to go, as my wife is calling me to go shopping - it's like the kid being called home for dinner in that old Prince Spaghetti ad!

yeah I gotta go shopping to, only I have to go to guitar center to buy more gear. Since I got her it the MR-8, My wife wants a better mike and vocal effects processor to sing through and who am I to argue with her about what she wants:)
