Ok, so I have a mixer that I used when I had a lot of hardware stuff to track out. I'd use my mixer to monitor and then track everything directly to my sound card. I don't like plugging things in, unplugging things so it was the way to go. Anyway, now I only need inputs for a mic (and preamp I would have to buy) and my turntable. Now I have a delta 1010lt so I’m definitely a bit overkill on I/O.

My main thing is that my mixer right now is a huge preamp and line insert. So I wouldn't say it's something I need. My concerns I have without having a mixer is monitoring. If I have to shell out for a Mackie big knob or more expensive, then it defeats the purpose. If I monitor directly off my soundcard, then I obviously not only need my computer on but also a recording app. Anyone who is mixerless get around this easily?

I'm unsure how I want to go, my mixer just takes up a lot of space for how functional it is. I can downsize (it's only a Yamaha 12/4 as is, not huge) but I’ll probably pay about the same as I’ll get for mine or more for a smaller mixer of the same or greater quality. My main goal is to have more space, things rack mounted, etc, and simplify my system.

Let me know if you went this route, especially if you went from a small mixer, and how you like it, what issues you have that you like/dislike and if you are content with it.

you have spelling issues as well...why don't you ask your father to type out your questions for you, lol...

he miss spelled monitor. big whoop.

anyways...i am mixer-less, but some software came with my interface to do my monitoring. it basically is a mixer with 10 sliders with panners, and then a master. i would guess you would get something similar.

when i went straight into my stock sound card, i used the windows mixer to adjust the playback and the currently recording tracks.

sometimes you can mess with monitor levels in your recording program. in protools, if a track is record enabled, the slider will be red, and you use that adjust output level.

other than that...i don't know. but i would guess you would have some sort of software mixer.

Well, the thing is i don't want a big digital mixer or interface really. I was mostly wondering if anyone is getting away with a small interface or preamps and how they dedicate the inputs with hardware, as well as monitering.

Thanks though, i do think it's the way to go really, i just don't feel like dumping a bunch of money on a project mix or digi 02 (i like PT).

yeah. i have a little 4 preamp interface, and i use the software mixer that came with it. the 10 channel mixer i'm talking about is software. i boot up a program and move the sliders with my mouse

I have a 16 channel mixer that I use for preamps for my delta 1010, I monitor straight out of my 1010. You mentioned that you don't want to use software, but how are you going to record? You just set up the 1010 outs in your recording software and monitor from there.

Well, the main thing is I make rap instrumentals so if i'm sampling, i want to go through records. SO then i have to open up a recording program to listen, or use headphones or other speakers.

I'm kind of thinking it's not the way to go. Plus, i could easily see myself picking up some hardware in the future, so, i don't know, maybe i should just deal with the lack of space.

I might be able to get a dedicated room for recording soon anyway. Then space is not going to be an issue. This was more of a thought than a desire, i was just curious if there was a way.

I use a Samson C-Control. I hate using the software that came with my soundcard so I got the c-control for $40 on ebay. Its got 4 inputs, volume controls for two sets of speakers, a headphone out and a talkback section which I have yet to actually use all in a half rack space. It also monitors the input level which is kind of cool. Im pretty sure behringer makes one almost exactly like it as well. SM Audio makes one called the m-patch as well.

What do you class as 'mixerless'?

I have a two-input EMU 0202 USB device. This has inbuilt hardware monitoring which works when the PC is off as long as your board sends power to the USB devices when the PC itself is off.

It has two adjustable preamps, so I guess technically it's a mixer, but I'm not sure on that.
