I'm deciding between the Beta52 and the ATM25.

Any suggestions/experiences with both?

Soundclips would help too.

I'm looking for more a punchy but deep sound.

for the sound you described and from your name (systmovadown) your gonna want the beta 52 its a much more modern/heavier rock kick mic. can be very clicky, the ATM25 is alot more natural sounding to me. I use the ATM25 for a more resonate jazzier/acoustic style kick.

I have an ATM25, but not a B52. The ATM is very versatile, due to it's neutrality. I also have an Audix D-6, which makes a great instant modern rock kick sound, no fuss, just put it in the hole, and push record. You do lose some of the distinctness of the individual drum, the recording mostly just sounds like a D-6.

However, with a little fiddling around with placement and some EQ in the mix, the ATM can do most of what the D-6 can, while the D-6 just can't sound as neutral as the ATM.

What kind of music are you recording?

I don't own the ATM, but I do like it's sound. I am also a big fan of the Audix D4 (the D6 is more like the D112). Both the ATM and the Audix are fairly natural-sounding.

It all depends on the drum and the style of music.

I have a beta 52, and the sound are deep ans punchy. I think that the d112 have more punch in mid-lows, but in low end, the 52 wins. For examples, with small bd´s (18", 20"), the 52 ever work well, for the effective low end, but i think that the d112 only work´s fine on 22" bd´s. And other thing. I dont´s like the high´s of the 52 because there aren´t natural. It sounds well for a Bd, it´s the sound that we ever earing in the comercials recordings. But I, how drummer, dont´s like it. The high´s of a bd mic, should be to sound natural, and the 52 sounds EQ in mid-high´s, for capture the definition of the stroke. This make that the 52 work well with all type of bassdrums. Finally, the 52 it´s a great mic for BD. I ever complain of all. :p
If you want some clip, i send to you all you want. My mail is ducatana@gmail.com, write me.

excuse my english!! :D

I agree with cool-on. Beta 52, D112, Audix D6 all have that punchy modern sound.

my first kick mic was an original D12, cool mic but my basschamer broke and i did loose some soundquality, so i sold the mic,
now i got a sennheiser e602, fat mic, nice highs, i find it much easier to get a pleasant sound with this mic than with the D12

i'm real curious about that D-6 since i do record lots of punk and metal and sometimes i'm looking for an even more agressive sound... anyways, i keep my 602 ! its great, but would be nice to add another mic to my collection

Might want to consider the Audix D-6. It's really punchy.
