Solar Power!!
Yes - I haven't posted in the clinic for yonks so here goes.

Here are two tracks off an album I produced for an aussie country artist named Cam Fletcher.

The first track was the single called 8 Seconds 3.38 meg It's a rodeo song.

The second is a ballad off the same album called Easier for Her 4 meg.

They were recorded on a Fostex G24S 1" machine and recorded and mixed through a Mackie 32/8.

cheers
John

Hey great!

Well, those are some pretty big sounding recordings. A few nasty mp3 problems though. Do you have a good encoder?

Very open sounding, a tad dry even. Very easy vocals, and I like the percussion a lot with the exception of the bass drum, but that's a common country sound (from the little country i'm forced to listen to). Very "stereo". The bass in the slower song is very "right there" (god I suck at expressing myself).

Thanks so much for posting to the clinic John, it really means a lot, even if that sounds a little silly. Keep it up. It's always good when you & ed and the other pro guys post in here....it gives us something to shoot for, even if we don't shoot for the exact same sound.

I'm rolling down the road, there's some black clouds and lightning out on the horizon, a slight smile on my lips, but it sure isn't amusement.

Okay, what's this? A rodeo? Of course! Okay, now I'm getting down on the horse, and now I'm out the gate! Yee-haw!

Good song. That's fiddle's wicked. I like country best when it leaves boom chikka boom behind and remembers it was raised on Ghost Riders in the Sky. It's beast against the man...

Really clean mix. Delicious sound on the lead guitar. I love that organ the first time it swells into the chorus. I want to hear more of it. I'dve tried to do that more than once too - swelling organs are just too exciting :D. I love that fiddle too, and I'dve tried to find more places to put more of it in.

In the final analysis, it's way better to have less of what's wonderful than too much.

Some nice songs, John.
I'm like Spin, I can't express myself very well.
Both songs kept my attention. The balance between singer and instruments was right on it.

I'd like to hear more of this guy, and your producing.

And, I believe everyone here is a regular.

Newbie review

Hi John,
8 seconds is a kick ass tune....
personally, I would like to hear the lead guitar more prominent (louder) in the mix....not adjusting anything else....just the lead..
asthetically, the harmony vox don't shine...
they might sound better as a 3 part alto-soprano kinda thing....
nothing to do with the mix though.

Easier for her....good job recording..
I like how the steel git pans....
fiddle is subtle and sweet...
now, as far as the performance goes...
I likes the harmony vox sooooooo much better on this.
This is the kind of harmony structure that I think would make 8 seconds a better overall song.

Good job recording on both overall.

Errrrrrrrrr...I don't like seeing that John's submission hasn't enjoyed a lot of hits! His work is world class and after hearing it, you all will KNOW that you can really trust what he shares on this BBS.

DOWNLOAD THESE DAMN SONGS YOU LOSERS!!!! :D

Ed

Yeh sorry ed, looked at the thread title the other day and thought it was for Dobro and Slack's ears only.
Had a listen and sounds very good to me. Sometimes the violins sound a bit like bag pipes. Not in a bad way, Quite interestingly actually.
But the mix is awsome. I see what you mean about what John can do. It just oozes experience. So John you say your on the road. Does that mean that your a travelling recording engineer.

Brilliant.....fellow aussie maaaaaaaaaaate.

I hate Country Music. You have this scourge in OZ too? Sorry.

Mix sounds great - I don't really dig the fiddle parts being panned so hard to the right & Left - & the chorus sounds a little essssy to me.

Ed's right, world class stuff - but we can't let the clinic become a mutual mastubation forum now, can we? :D

"It just oozes experience."

I ooze experience sometimes too, but the trouble is it's messy and has nothing to do with recording.

Joro - about the guitar in 8b Seconds - aside from the voice, to me it sounds like the most upfront thing in the mix. What's your thinking behind boosting it even more?

Hi Dobro,
It indeed has presence but, perhaps my particular sonic taste is showing through.
I simply like in your face guitar and It is just my opinion that it could come up slightly....
Obviously, without hurting the vox....
I suppose I have a lot to learn yet....ya know?

I dig the songs, but I'd boost the vox on 8 seconds and try doing something to fill the left side of the stereo image. I'd also put a hot branding iron under this guy's nuts to get him to REALLY sing. Sounds kinda.. lackadaisical.

C'mon, I CAN'T be the only person who thinks this.

One more thing (yes, I'm bitchy this morning)... I'm more into that "George Strait" sound where everything is kinda... lacking in treble. Dunno how to explain it... these instruments are VERY detailed, whereas I see country as being "Listen to my voice and dig your woman when I shut up" type of a thing.

Then again, based on your credits on your page, I don't know shit. Like ya'll didn't know this already. ;)

I like the songs, John! (but I REALLY like that Jazz band from a while back. AWESOME!) These are good songs!

I'm not much of a country fan but damn, what a great sound. You did this on a Fostex 1" 24 track? I used a B-16 years ago and I don't remember it sounding so crisp. Very good sound.

hey John,

Since its for Dobro and Slack, I am not going to offer any mixing IMHOS. Not that there are any. THe track is where it should be.Like someone paid a lot of money for it and got their money's worth.

I listened to "easier for her".

Its also a really good song BTW.

Cyan, it's not really *for* me & dobro....it's just that we were bitching in another thread about people hanging around but never posting to the clinic :)

Slackmaster 2000

Listened to Easier for Her tonight. Really good song, really good recording, and that fiddle part is magic. Drums right out in front, eh? I wanted to hear more piano, but then I love piano on country. Man, you guys must be *steeped* in country and western down there to come up with product this good.

Righteous choral ending. Righteous. Excellent. :)

Beautiful work John. Good to hear some stuff from you.

I really liked the second song a lot, though they're both really good. Guitar sounds great on 8 Seconds, and the fiddles are awesome on the second tune.

NICE!

Great Reference

Great Work John. Nice comfortable mix that showcases beautiful 80's tones! I agree with dobro...That's the sound of experience. Thanks for sharing dude. Cheers!
