Can't say I've ever pushed it in on a speaker but what negative effect does pushing it in have? That part is just the dust cap correct?

I'm sure the engineers who are involved in that driver's design would say that it does matter! They put a lot of effort into into it. I'm sure it has some subtle effect on frequency response and dispersion.
