The Pie Guy
This one has that awful familar sound to me.....you know what I mean?

When you think it's original but, it bothers you that you might be too close to something else........anyways...........since I suck at rock tunes (electric hard stuff) I think I am gonna stay with this kind of thing for a while..............no drums needed...ya know?

New Folk....................it's at Soundclick...................

Waddaya think fellas?
Joe

You have an account, we don't Joro.

We suddenly need to login...didn't happen to us before :)

Sorry, Joro- "Your Browser Must Accept Cookies" is a killer for me- I won't register there.-Richie

The name of the tune would be.........?

I'm listening to "What You Used To Be" and it ain't folk. It's got drums and electric guitars and all sorts of stuff. (But it's a nice tune - vocals sort of too much in my face but other than that I like it - nice writing.) So what should I have listened to?

Joro,

I listen to the track at the top of the list on the NWR site. I assume that is the one for review here.

There seems to be some very heavy bottom end to this recording that is probably un-intensional.

Perhaps this is due to your monitors and or mixing environment?

Try mixing it at a louder level and on speakers that have been eq'ed to sound decent on store bought CD's of similar music. The mud in the sound is killing my ears!

The tune itself is pleasant enough and could be the beginning of something good with some vocals.

Cheers! :)

Yo Joro, thanks for posting it up on nowhere. Ok, so tell us what mics and pres were used. I think the lead sounds distorted at times, almost like it was recorded DI with a pickup. It sounds like distortion, but not clipping. Acoustic folk is usually a vehicle to tell a story. If you're not in storytelling mode, you need change, so that the song goes "somewhere". It would benefit from a chorus, and a cadence at the end, so you can anticipate the ending, which makes it sound like you have a plan. BTW- I liked the mandolin work and the lead vox on "Right or Wrong" a lot.-Richie

Aha! Got it from NWR - (guess I'm getting set in my ways already - I belong to Soundclick but I have to drop all my 'shields' when I go there -they're 'ad' people.)

New Folk - The rhythm guitar is a bit muddy - bottom end coming too much to the front. It sounds like a nice guitar, though. Is it mic'd? Or is it a soundhole pickup?

Richard's right there's a lot of distortion on the lead - it's really a hot signal.

Good start for a tune - I'm assuming you're putting words to it.

OK now I'm listening to "Right or Wrong" - cool tune!!! (I'm originally from Gettysburg, PA so I'm into this stuff.) Great harmonies. But the acoustic rhythm guitar is right on compared to your new tune. So what's the diff with the new tune?

Nice songwriting, man!!
Milan

Milan that is my finished page man....thanks for that....Skids and his wife Mika collabbed with me on that tune....
Try joro2 at Soundclick or the NowhereRadio link for the new one...and thanks for trying....

I never had this much trouble with Soundclick....must be something new....

The Ghost of FM Thanks man....I tracked and mixed this morning....

BIG MISTAKE..........

I should know better....
I have re-mixed and cut tha bass in half....
I agree with you that it is just the beginning of a tune....needs development for sure...thanks man....

Richie here is my signal chain for the rhythmn...
Rode NT1 into a PreSonus Mic Pre into a Mackie 1402 VLZ Pro into an Audigy Platinum Card...tracked in Cool edit...
and yup...the lead is direct from the Fishman on my Martin into the Mackie etc........the kids woke up early....started fartin' around and I had to stop recording with the mic.... I will re-do for sure...
the bass was direct as well into the Mackie etc....
I agree with you on the structure of the tunage as well man...I will develop it more....it seems though that if I don't get something down (recorded) I tend to lose it.....
Thanks for listening and your comments man...very cool :D

MC and Richie.....Right or Wrong was recorded by my very good friend Willie McCulloch....we write together online....ya see...Willie is talented...I am a rookie at this stuff...I am merely the lyricist on Right or Wrong....DavidK and his gal pal added the violin and the Cello....thanks for the compliments though...much appreciated by all for sure. :D

Take it easy fellas,
Joe

Joro, what kind of Fishman do you have in your Martin? If it's just a piezo, there's only so much you can do with it (try a Yamaha AG Stomp). On the other hand, if you have a Prefix Plus (a blender with a condenser mic and a piezo), I can give you some tips that will help a lot. On the other hand, if you don't have a Prefix Plus, I would recommend installing one in your Martin. It will drop into the same cut in the bout as the original Prefix, with no cutting, and no additional wiring.
One of my original scratch tracks, #7, "Goody's Song" made the cut. It was done with the Prefix Plus, with some judicious use of notch control and a boatload of bass cut.-Richie

Thanks Richie...My Martin is brand new and it's the Classic 4.....I have the Prefix Plus in My Taylor 314CE (which is back to it's original condition BTW ;) )

where do you set the notch and Bass?
Thanks man,
Joe

Hey Joro, thanks for putting it up on NWR. I hate registering too!
Just curious, why are you recording those beautiful guitars direct rather than micing them? I don't hate the sound of direct acoustic in general, I just thought this would work better with a mic. My .02.

Yo Joro- Try this- use a send and receive cable- one trs to 2 ts plugs. Finding good ones is hard- Parker makes one for the Parker Fly that's 15' long and good quality. Set the Prefix Plus internal switch on "stereo", so now the signal for the mic, and the signal for the pickup are going to 2 separate outputs. Send those outputs to 2 preamps, or the 2 sides of a dual preamp. My Joemeek twinQ works very well for this. If your preamp has bass cut, engage the bass cut on the pickup side only. Set the notch at 1:00, the bass EQ about 1/3 of the way up, treble and mid flat. Put the frequency selector all the way down- 250 hz. Volume on the Fishman no higher than 1:00, or the Fishman's preamp will clip. 10:00 is better. Put the blender slider dead center. Then bring up the gain on the mic side of the pickup until indicated peaks are -2 to -4 db. This will sound thin and weak, no body, but also no distortion. Then do the same with the pickup side, and record them to 2 separate tracks. When you mixdown, bring up the mic track to about -6db, then start adding in the pickup side slowly, until it sounds good, and stop.
What I've found is that the mic side is thin and weak, lacks presence, and sucks. The pickup side is bassy and distorts at higher gain levels, and sucks, although it does have some presence. If you add just the right amount of pickup to the mic track, it actually sounds like a mic'd up guitar. Sometimes, as in "Goody's Song", I'll add just a wee bit more pickup, using it as an effect, essentially adding a very little bit of distortion to the blend on purpose. The same tactic will work live into a PA or a good acoustic amp (Strawberry Blonde works *very* well with the Prefix Plus), but you have to play with the phase reverse and the frequency selector if you run into feedback issues. Best of luck. I'm betting when you get a real handle on how to use the Prefix Plus, you'll drop one into your Martin. When you learn to use it, it's one of the very best pickup systems.-Richie

A good start joro, I see the backbone for something decent here, a good melody line is going to drive this progression far.

nice little acoustic jam........i'm not crazy about the DI sound, but for sketching ideas, it works........

Richie,
Hey man...thanks a lot man....I really appreciate the info...
but I have two problems....

I can't find a stereo switch on the inside of the Fishman....

and I can only record to one track at a time...
I can apply multiple ins to my mixer but my card won't let me use more than one of the ins at one time ...(I don't think it can...hmmmmmm...) I gotta check that out..
But really man....thanks a lot...

Lynx and Powderfinger...Thanks for checking it out fellas...
I just wrote some lyrics for this but as most of you guys know...I can't sing to save my life and I doubt anyone would want to sing these lyrics...too bad though...it's a good hook...

Damned If I Do

V1
I’m in the middle
The middle of life
Struggle each day
It get’s harder all the time

V2
Got me a job
Work it Nine to Five
But I always think of you
And what I left behind

Chorus
Damned if I do
Damned if I don’t
I wish that I knew
Which way to go
Which way to go

V3
And the Booze and The dope
Put me in a cloudy haze
As I try to Block out
What seems like better days

V4
No wife, no kids, no home
Searching for some shining light
In the streets is where I roam
For a way to get through this night

Bridge
And the booze and the dope…
don’t take away the pain….
anymore…

Chorus (x2)
Damned if I do
Damned if I don’t
I wish that I knew
Which way to go
Which way to go

these need work too :D

Thanks again fellas,
Joe
