Hi there, I have just purchased the focusrite voicemaster for my home studio and I am a beginner to preamps. I am recording country style vocals, can anyone give me some suggested settings for the system as I am pulling my hair out trying to get a good sound, but the vocal always sounds very sharp.

Turn off the eq and track with compression at 3:1 fast attack and slow release, No other parts of the preamp engaged. No Other Sections Engaged>
Once that settles in, introduce the other sections one at a time with MINIMAL settings. The focusrite can be a very usable pre but the bells and whistles need to be applied sparingly for clean vox

/\ oh i so agree, the EQ section can be so brutal sometimes, kinda sterrile and dry.

I kinda like the warmth and the collor knob :D what is it called? tube emulator?

That "Tube Warmth" thing can be really cool, but first you have to get to know the pre and the compressor and the gain stage inside this monster. Once you getthat tamed, even the eq is usable.

Actually you know what?

They are talking about the AKG C3000 mics in Mic section, and i think thats my biggest problem ,not my EQ on VM PRO.

I wondered a lot about that, thank God for this place, now i know its my stinkin mic thats so harsh and brittle:mad:

I love this place :D

Yeah i like to use the "tube warmth" on some synth,i love how fat and colorfull it makes it :D

Oh and some drums too

Take your time learning how to use the VoiceMaster, and it'll give you very usable vocal tracks. Learn the preamp first, then move on to compression. I vote for a 3:1 compression ratio too. Balance the two, and you're gold. Save the EQ for that "coat of polish" on your vocals, if you need or want it.

Ok a newb question would be how do you measure 3:1 on VM PRO?

Would that be 30 threshold and 1 gain? The plugins have that option but not VM

start with the threshold at -18 (9'o'clock) and advance to - 20 (or more?)
slow attack
auto release
only use as much make up gain as you need to bring the volume back to where it was b4 compressing
That vintage harmonics thing is kinda harsh

Why not getting an RNP and an RNC???... wouldn't it be way far better than any strip?

way far better? ...nah, great at that price point! There are some nice strips but I think you will do well with that combo
