I was looking for a middle-of-the-road preamp to get me going while I'm setting myself up when I came across the Focusrite P6. I have heard good things about Focusrite pres, but I couldn't find any intelegible reviews of the unit. The only one I found was on Zzounds.com, one guy said it was the best thing since sliced bread and the other guy said it was crap and to go drop $2500 on a pre. I'm more inclined to listen to the first guy, but I want some more opinions on it. Is it worth $400? Thanks!

For another $100 you could get a RNP. Depends on what you want.

I am looking more for an all-around pre. Something that won't color the sound too much but still have the ability to warm it up some if I need. Right now all I have is an Event EMP-1. It's not bad, but a bit thin. It's considerably cheaper too, and you can hear that in the mix. Not to mention, it's kinda rigged right now... :D

I own a Trakmaster and have been very happy with it. I use the digital card with it, output sent digitally into a Lexicon MPX-500 (reverb) then to disk.

As a pre-amp it is quite "musical". I have used a Rode NTK mic into it (sounds great) and also a Fender Stratocaster into the Focusrite (compression & EQ), then the Lexicon MPX 500 (reverb / effects) then to disk.

It has never failed to deliver nice sounds. There is no noise from the unit and the detail and clarity is very pleasing. The EQ is subtle yet effective, and the compression works nicely to reduce the effects of bad singing/playing.

I retro-fitted the digital card myself, and the build quality (component layout) and machining quality of the case was first rate. The analog input/outputs are also first rate.

There may be other pre-amps out there that are equally effective, but I always turn to the Trakmaster for a reliable and pleasing result.
