I've been looking at Focusrite Compounders as an alternative to the behringer composer pro-xl's and dbx 266's that i'm used to... anyone here use them and able to comment on how much better they are, wether it's a massive step up or not in quality ?

Yeah but....... you could step up to an rnc, hhb, focusrite, an old dbx,............depends on what he wants it for. If it is just to HAVE a compressor, the berrie is fine

it's mostly for guitar and drums. maybe even bass sometimes ! any good ?

I think you may want to look at some other ooption at the $500 -$600 range
The focusrite is a good piece but I think there might be other options that'll work better for you. How many channels do you need? Safe sound P1 is a great preamp, limiter, compressor, expander @ $500, RNC's are excellent for everything BUT bass (some folks claim to get a good track on bass, I can't)
DBX 1046 has 4 channels and doesn't suck, M audio Tampa is getting a lot of good reviews (I've never used one) Lots of good gear out there.
I would recommend the Safe Sound from front end audio, Warren and Shane are great guys and will always be there to back up their products

just to keep this conversation going,

i've seen lots of focusrite stuff in magazines, but never used any of it,
i got a bunch of dbx compressors,
used a 266, got rid of it, same for a 166,
but now i'm using the 166a and 166XL's
i like them, but would be cool if i could start looking around for another brand, just to see what difference in sound i'd get...

so what focusrite modals can be compared with dbx 166XL compressors?

i mainly record drums: snare, kick, toms,...

thanks

personally, I would prefer a DBX 166 over the compression in a Focusrite Platinum series. Blue series and red series are a different story though. I don;t really think that a platinum Focusrite would really be much of a step up at all in compression over the behringer composer pro's. There are some other comps though in a very resonable proce range that would though.... i.e. DBX, RNC, HHB, Joe Meek etc... like mentioned above:)
