Foam Pads for Monitors

I just wanted to pass this on to the faithful. I placed some cheap packing foam under my JBL monitor speakers and I have to admit to a very nice jump in soundstage. I guess what happens is that heavy monitors can couple low frequencies to your table causing an unbalance in the EQ. Bass definition and stereo image has jumped nicely. Placeing your speakers directly on your work table can be one contributer to the "dark" sound tracking problem that some have complained about and I have experienced first hand. Do yourself a cheap favor and isolate your monitors from your table. Its a simple low tech fix that pays an audible return.

Hope I've helped at least one person solve a problem.

thane, you posted the speaker stand thing too?
i was just in the hardware store checking this speaker stand DIY out.
the 3" plastic pipe is 65cents a ft. Need ~3ft each side...$3.80.
The 4 rings needed were $1.29 each... say $5.00 total.
Then the base and top.. scrap lumber, or whatever..say $5.00..

complete.. ~$15.00 for a pair!
paint 'em standard black $1.29 for the perfectionists only..or orange-mango?

$15.00...thats really a good DIY. my price range too! thanks!

I was in BestBuy..they wanted like $129-200 and then they had their own issues (not adjustable heights etc..)
my physics friend and articles were stating positives for using stands. like the thread states..bass freq transfers etc.. move em to stands or hang from the ceiling!!

think of the table-space you gain..more room for lava lamps and sht! :)

I did that for years 'till I broke down and bought Mopads. I still save mouse pads, though, they come in useful for a lot of things.
 
Another tip

Here's another tip for those of us using isolation foam or mouse pads...if you place your hand on the work table near the bottom of the speaker and still feel bass vibration then the isolation is not complete. I have found it difficult to eliminate it completely though but you can reduce further by more isolation. That low tech stand project may well be the best deal for scratch change.

I use mouse pads under my Bose Roommate speakers- though I thought I invented it. My Event 20/20p's are on Raxxess 36" stands filled with sand for decoupling (ha, I said coupling).
